I'm running on a bit of a budget and would like to add extra planes to the simulator. I don't have money for the full paid releases available on the MSFS marketplace so would like to find some free stuff. I remember when I used to use FS2004 back in the day you could download free planes and airport scenery and other items - where is the best place to get that but for this new FS2020 simulator? Any links or pointers for the best resource of free planes that I can just download and install would be fab! Thanks, James.
Your query about enriching your Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 experience without stretching your budget takes me back to the days of FS2004. The excitement of adding new aircraft and scenery to the sim without a cost is still very much alive in the MSFS community.
Firstly, you're in luck! The MSFS 2020 platform, much like its predecessors, supports a vibrant freeware scene. There are numerous websites where you can find high-quality free aircraft, ranging from general aviation to complex airliners, and even historic or military planes. Let me guide you through some top resources:
Each of these categories offers a rich variety of aircraft, catering to all sorts of flying preferences. What's great about these resources is that they also provide installation guides and support, making the process seamless even for beginners.

I built up a collection of planes on my PC and no longer use it as it's not quite up to snuff for MSFS. Do you think it's possible to load MSFS for XBOX with content downloaded elsewhere?limiting myself to the Xbox store is a bit of a shame reall...
Anyone else have a problem with these people? They offer there site to 'nonpaying' members but make it miserably difficult to access. I have been unable to get in for 2 weeks!!! I complained and they said 'paying' members have priority. Here's t...
So I am running on a very tight budget. I am a previous FSX (disc) user and would love to upgrade to the latest Microsoft Flight Simulator now I have purchased a brand-new powerful machine capable of running it.However, my conundrum is I have ZERO b...
I doubt there is an answer to this question, but I figured I'd throw it out there...With increasing regularity, when I am handed off to ground at my destination airport, MSFS crashes. It's always the most frustrating because I've completed the flight...
Wanted to share with all, and inspired by Jan's excellent posts. These are some very flyable and downright lovely freeware planes that I regularly fly on my sim despite having heaps of payware aircraft in my hangar. I think this speaks volumes for the all-round quality of these models.
No energy (admitting I'm too lazy while trying to sound sophisticated!) to post links to download but they are mostly from the file libraries of Flightsim.com but I will try to post later or upon requests (if any). My two cents' worth of contribution. Hope you like.
Great post, Khalid, I don't know why it has not been done before. My sim of choice is FS9. I've never even considered FSX, so the aircraft that I will add to your list are all FS9 planes. This is just a quick selection from my active hangar; I have in excess of 250 planes from which I could choose, and that would take some time and organization. But, from among those that I regularly fly, these are among my favorites. In each case you will notice that the airplanes are painted in the livery of my choice, mostly by me, and all have 2D panels that duplicate, to the extent possible, the planes original. OK, here we go...
This is the Cessna 404 Titan of Mike Stone. No matter the controversy that seemed to surround Mike, he gave us wonderful, no frills, models that flew beautifully. This is one, but I have several, and you can't go wrong with any one of them!
Another of my nostalgic favorites. I had many hours as a passenger on this aircraft and in this livery. It is an AI plane made to fly. Like Mike Stones planes, it is no frills (the doors don't open, etc., but it flys well). Here it is at MVY just cleared to the active.
This is another favorite! It is a Beechcraft Baron B55 (there are none, freeware or payware, for FS9). This is an older, well modeled AI plane made flyable. The paint is mine, and if you could see inside, you would see one of my better panels. When you can't find what you want already made, check what there might be in the AI fleet (there are tons); some of these models are excellent, and who cares if the doors don't open. Do we enjoy this sim because doors open and close, or because an airplane is fun to fly?
Last, but not least, another favorits. This is not an FS9 plane either; it is either from FS2000, or FS2002, can't remember. However, it is a plane that I flew as a student pilot back in Marathon, Florida, back in the day, as they say. It has been made to fly in FS9 and does so extreemly well. I've painted it up to replicate the Cherokee 140 I actually flew...
If this thread continues to grow, as I believe it will, I will dig into my reserve Hangar for more of my favorite freeware airplanes. I have many, many of them. Freeware aircraft, sceneries, and gauges are the very backbone of FS9 and FSX. Without the freeware developers constantly seeding these sims, they would have perished years ago. I applaud these selfless people, I thank them, and I thoroughly enjoy their work. There are no payware planes in any of my hangars!
Klee, you said, "the controversy that seemed to surround Mike" (Stone). What controversy? I guess I didn't get the memo on that one. As you said his A/C are great flyers and he is/was prolific. If I wanted a freeware plane and it was from Mike Stone I could be assured it would be a good one.
Klee: thank you for building on this thread, and thank you for your kind words. I love the repaints and the panel (wow) you made for your aircraft. I also have a crush on the Electra - Hudson - Lodestar line of aircraft, and I even bought a payware one for my simming utopia. I am going through the motions of learning to repaint (or so I wish to think). I am sure you're more read than I am in here so what you say about Mike Stone's controversy must have roots, but I tend to agree with Bill and Zippy's proposition that whatever unfair criticism was thrown does not discount one bit off the heft and class of Stone's work. As they say, and notwithstanding how good the product is, you'll get the odd troll here and there; there'll always be one! His work is much more than a gift horse, and its mouth is flawless, well no frills, agreed. In fact the Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer that I have listed was built on Mike Stone's base model:
Thank you Gene for the lovely Tracker, and it looks that we both use the same AI Ships and AI Ship Traffic for FSX by Henrik Nielsen, which is an awesome series of freeware addons. Can't imagine my sim without it.
They are ex-Alphasim which were made available -if my memory does not betray me- as freeware on some web site that belongs to Alphasim. I know that the Tu-16 is also on Flightsim.com under FSX Tu-16 Badger Update
I am a university student, and thus it's quite expected that I'm running low on money, especially money reserved for hobbies and games. I wanted to start flying on VATSIM, so I started looking into how I can get a relatively realistic experience with real-life data.
If your hardware can support MSFS, then I strongly recommend shelling out 10EUR/mo to get the Xbox game pass, which includes the MSFS base game. The price is low, and you may not need to get Navigraph charts because they still update the game's AIRACs. And the default aircraft AFAIK are not that bad. Not to mention the abundance of other games you get along with your subscription.
For people that are about on the same boat as me, here are what you need to pay for: FSX:SE which goes for 4.99EUR on Steam right now, and Navigraph Charts. I'm sure that anyone looking at this right now knows of these costs.
In case you want to go completely free(without Navigraph), you can also use the Honeywell FMC to fly. From what I have been able to see, you can forget using SIDs and STARs, which either means that you use headings from (Possibly old) charts you find online, or you request headings from TWR. Both of which personally classify as an un-authentic experience, given that it is not a regular departure/arrival flow. Not to say that, setting a direct-to for a waypoint literally removes the flight plan. Very, very frustrating.
Also, if someone has other ways they use FSX to fly on VATSIM at a budget, please let me know. This is my current solution which definitely needs work. Anything (airplanes you use, different FMCs, sceneries/airports), would be greatly appreciated.
