Ruby and Python drivers versus bytea support

I have an application I am considering writing in Ruby, and another in
Python. However, it needs to ship binary data to and from Postgresql
(8.4) in the form of a bytea. A lot of posts I've read mentioned
problems with specific drivers in doing this. Can anyone provide a
list of drivers that correctly support the bytea type?
