Hi all;
First off thank you for joining the PGS guides meeting last night and this morning. Too bad that we could not go skiing, but I found the Guides meeting from this morning valuable.
Here is a summary of the meeting outcomes.
-- AIARE course alternatives: This was discussed briefly and the brand strength was pointed out overwhelmingly. I will still contact AAI and look into the overhead cost of being a part of their organization.
-- We decided that we will go for the digital format for the guides meeting. Consensus was that it was more professional, met the risk management objectives and can be performed offline.
-- There will be two forms which Kurt and Shane have agreed to finalize: One form will be filled out and submitted to the PGS email by the guides meeting leader before the actual meeting. This form will contain basic objective information. Everyone is expected to show up to the guides meeting prepared with the basic Blue Book info filled out. The second form will be filled out by a scribe, not the meeting leader. He or she facilitates the discussion and makes sure that we stay on track. There will be one such form that comprises all the trips and courses that take place on Snoqualmie Pass and/or Crystal Mountain on the same day so long as the respective guide is present at the meeting. If he or she has an earlier or later meeting time, they will have to conduct their own guides meeting. Kurt also has a form that can be printed and filled out in analog fashion. If you go this route, fill out the form, take a photo of it and submit it to the PGS group email with the usual heading (AM trip form/ Date/Name/Location/Trip or Course name)
-- A guides meeting leader is not the same thing as a course or trip leader. Every course or trip has a trip leader. By default it will be the most senior guide, unless you amongst yourselves decide otherwise. The guides meeting leader will be assigned by the office and could be in charge of a meeting that includes multiple trips or courses.
-- Radio comms: Kurt already sent out the needed frequencies and it is your responsibility to make sure your radio works. Dave Jordan and Kurt are great resources. Please establish radio comms before heading into the field, check in at 12 noon and again when you are out of the field. Please do not drive off the Pass or the Crystal ski area without having established comms with the other groups.
-- PGS info X Whatsapp: Tova set up a Whatsapp group that is supposed to encourage you to create a professional but informal information exchange where you can post obs, give heads up etc. at the end of a guided day or personal outing. We decided to roll with this for a month and revisit it around 12/20.
-- End of day communication: Let's use the Whatsapp format for this as well. This can be quite simple. I would like to see this: Group Trevor / AIARE 1 Snoqualmie Pass out. Gina and Martin are in charge of monitoring this unless otherwise assigned, but this way everyone will be in the loop and it should be very easy to do.
-- Level of communication: Please make sure that you have adequate level of comms, no matter where you operate. If you decide to rely on a radio, you must be good at it. If you decide to trust the phone, please know its limitations or connectivity or battery life. PGS has a sat phone and Inreach on hand for you to use. The Inreach Explorer is a great device and I highly encourage all of you to invest in one of them. You will ALWAYS be able to communicate.
-- Scarpa outstanding orders: Some of you have Scarpa orders outstanding. The email has been sent.
-- Fischer skis: Forgot to mention that Mike Hattrup, the new Fischer backcountry boss offers a deal to all of you for $249 for any ski or boot or binding. Email Mike if you are interested.
-- Embroidery: Please bring any garment you would like to have embroidered by the shop in the next week if you can. Please mark the desired spot with masking tape.
-- Course locations for the Companion rescue courses. Even though not really designed as a backcountry experience, please try to take the participants to an area that is relatively attractive and quiet. It is still a day out in the mountains for them. Some location suggestions will be sent to you soon.
-- Field training make up day: Please have a look at the doodle invite you should have received and fill your availability accordingly as soon as you can. I will then decide on a date.
Thank you again for joining and for all of your input, it's much appreciated!
