Subject: Patient Abuse Reporting Direction
Hello Dr. DeGaetano,
Per our discussion this morning regarding the on-going topic on the appropriate manner to address patients with confirmed or suspected abuse, please find attached a memorandum from NSU’s General Counsel in conjunction with my formal inquiry on the matter.
As we also discussed this morning, the main nuance to observe that is different from prior practice is the contraction of Florida law on the matter of anonymous or involuntary practitioner reporting regarding the adult patient population. Healthcare providers
can no longer report allegations of abuse without the patient’s consent. The exceptions are pediatric patients and vulnerable adult patients.
I have highlighted the more relevant areas in the attached document.
I recommend the COM leadership share this with Faculty who have access to patient care.
Shoud there be any additional concerns please contact me at your convenience.
Sincerely,
Jessie Gilley, LHRM
