There are three FidoNet BBS' still operating:
BBS Name Phone No. Sysop
Up In James' Attic 412-431-2891 James Walton
Politically Incorrect 412-766-0743 Bob Westerman
SoundingBoard 412-621-4604 Stu Turk
Other FidoNet boards in the Pittsburgh area have either shut down
or are not answering lately. I will be shutting SoundingBoard down
soon due to lack of callers. Also, we are disconnected from the main
FidoNet backbone since the board acting as our local Hub (Wayfarer's
Inn) shut down last year.
The end of an era.
Anyone remember a program called Blue Wave? I remember being quite
excited to get it.... also had something called QModem.

I wonder if the old AutoBOSS is still operating... located in Bunola, PA
IIRC? I used to run EarthBase California, GrafNet and was co-sysop on
Shadow's Cave and others. All were running TAG 2.6g... those were the days.

PHB: What have you done to improve the morale of your co-workers?
Alice: I didn't give them the beatings they so richly deserved.
PHB: I'll shorten that to 'Team Player'.

I used to log on to "Chatterbox" and one out of Trafford... I just
cannot remember the name of that one.... LOL those were the days
before the WWW.
Anyone remember any of the multi player games that some of them used
to have?
I still have a HD that has some of the old DOS programs laying around
somewhere..

How do you even hook up with a BBS nowadays, the last time I did it was at

Well.... my new machine still came standard with a modem. Though it
seems to be going the way of the 5.25 inch floppy.
I assume you are using Windows? :-) If so, there should be a
semi-hidden program called HyperTerm that, if you can figure out how to use
it, may give you permission to call a BBS via a dialup (i.e. ordinary phone
line.) It is Windows and Hyperterm that brought about the "end of an era"
in BBSing. Sort of looked like Microsoft was afraid of competition from
mostly free BBS's so they made it as difficult as possible to call them to
encourage the switch to the more profitable internet services. :-)
If you can't figure out HyperTerm (or come to the conclusion that its
the stupidest comm program ever written) then try to remember where you put
your old external modem from your last DOS computer. Plug it into the
unused COM1 on your new Ccomputer and set up your old Telix, QModem, or
Procomm to run in a DOS Window. This will let you call local BBS's the old
way. :-)
The Western PA section of FidoNet (Net 129, AKA PittNet) once had
something like 40 active BBSs. Now it has three. A few of the boards that
shut down are still reachable via an web address but I don't have a list of
the addresses.

First Sanyo Opus BBS (sysop was Paul Kelly.) Shut down 1/1/2000. The
computer it was running on (not a Sanyo anymore) would not make the Year
2000 rollover and the sysop had neither the time or the money to upgrade.
I was the sysop of the Chatterbox, that was my board. Glad you remember it.
Bought a house, had to take it down. The expense of moving 8 lines (9
including the house line) would have come to about $400 alone and with
closing costs on the house, and what with the internet killing bbs's anyway
back there in '96 it just wasn't worth it to keep it running. Hated to see
it go. Still have the software, user-lists, and some chat logs from the
final days around here on floppies somewhere.
I remember a few boards from Trafford, most notable LadyDi's, her board and
mine used to have bowling parties down there at ther Mosside Lanes on 48.

Legend of the Red Dragon (?) and Tradewars were my favorites.

I have about 2 bags of floppies with a *ton* of old stuff that I'm going to
get around to looking at, then throwing away someday.
The SoundingBoard was one of the first bbs's I ever logged onto. There were
a couple of other FidoNet boards that I logged onto as well. Can't remember
the names of them though. I kind of alternated between PCBoards and the
Opus boards but when I went to put up my own, because of the multi-line
aspect I went with a software called SynchroNet. They went out of business
shortly after I put up my board, an dI was left without support. Sorry to
hear SoundingBoard's going down but it was a good run...
