What's the heck's going on over at WYEP? I just heard a commercial on
WYEP that said the generic Music Mix show was being extended to Friday
evenings for 4 1/2 hours, apparently in the place of what was the
Modern Times Extension with the Perkster. Looks like another step in
the ongoing decline of local radio.

It doesn't make sense from a ratings or pledge amount standpoint,
since MTE seemed to be a popular show on WYEP, providing a good mix of
alternative and local music, most of which is never heard on
Pittsburgh commercial radio. The MTE usually had more variety than
the usual fare of the overnight Modern Times shows, and being during
prime time, it was more accessible to me and I'm sure a lot of other
people.

The MTE over the years, with Randy Lemasters, his successor (sorry,
forgot his name), and most recently the Perkster, has turned me on to
a lot of artists and music I might not have normally heard. It sounds
to me like WYEP is becoming more and more "generic" (for lack of a
better word) as the Music Mix gradually takes over most of the
schedule. Pretty soon its all going to sound like elevator music (I'm
sure a lot of people think that it already does).

Deletion of my favorite show and DJ (been a fan of the Perkster since
his Saturday overnight stints) will cause me to think twice before
shelling out future membership $ to WYEP. Getting tickets for their
benefit in September will also be a lower priority for me, but I'm
still interested in a lot of the bands that will be playing, so I'll
probably still end up going.

I don't care to start a thread on what Pittsburgh station or music
genre is better than the other. WRCT and WPTS don't factor into my
listening because I can't receive them where I live just 5 miles from
downtown.

For anyone who doesn't like this change, show your displeasure however
you see fit, but you can also vote your displeasure with your pledges,
or lack of, during the upcoming pledge drive.

I just spoke to the Perkster himself for confirmation. Unfortunatley,
WYEP has, for reasons that appear to be precarious and ill-concieved,
decided to cancel the Modern Times Extension. The decision was made
hastily, and without concern for the fans of the Modern Times program.
For those of you out there who don't know, the Modern Times Extension is a
great modern music radio program in Pittsburgh on WYEP 91.3, running on
Friday nights, and hosted by the colorful John Perkovic.

The change is immediate, and The Perkster was not notified until last
week. The Perkster has asked me to tell everyone that he has enjoyed
hosting the show, and is still fighting to keep great modern music on the
air. As of this writing, The Perkster will no longer be heard on WYEP.
If you care to write him a letter, send it to da...@usa1.com, and I'll be
sure he gets it (he doesn't have EMail access).

I've now lived in two other cities outside of Pittsburgh (Orlando, and now
Boston), and let me assure you that MTX is the BEST modern music program
on the east cost. MTX highlighted great artists that you would usually
never hear on the radio. It also was a haven for local Pittsburgh music,
and showcased the great music coming out of the rich music scene of
Pittsburgh. Over one thousand radio stations later, the Modern Times
Extension has remained my favorite radio show of all time, and I always
listened to it when returning to the city.

In its place, WYEP will play its usual "music mix" that is heard the rest
of the time on the station.

Over the years, WYEP has killed off several great radio programs,
including the cherished New-Age music program Nightscapes a few years ago.

However, it's not too late! I've decided to start a "Save the Modern
Times Extension" program. Stand up and fight for your modern music!

The Perkster did not ask me to do the following, but I feel that we can
stand up and tell WYEP to save this program! Truly, one of Pittsburgh
hidden treasures.

S A V E the Modern Times Extension!
-----------------------------------
WYEP 91.3FM HAS CANCELLED THE MODERN TIMES EXTENSION! The Program
Directors at WYEP has decided that Pittsburgh can do without good modern
and local music! Gone is the great music from fresh new artists from all
over the world, the local musician and band interviews, and the insightful
and colorful hosting of The Perkster. Let them know that the Pittsburgh
area supports the Modern Times Extension, and that the pledges they depend
on will suffer from the result!

CALL WYEP: 412-381-9900 studio
412-381-9131 office

Tell them to keep the Modern Times Extension!

FAX WYEP: 412-381-9126 FAX

Write them and tell that you support modern music in Pittsburgh!

WYEP Address:

WYEP 91.3 FM
2313 E. Carson St.
Pittsburgh, PA 15203

The sooner you communicate with the programmers at WYEP, the better chance
we have of saving the Modern Times Extension.

EMail: da...@usa1.com

BTW, If you like the Perkster, you'll love his band Puppetshow!

Have fun!

You can email a FAX (text-only, obviously), to YEP at the following address:

remote-printer.WYE...@14123819126.iddd.tpc.int

Personally, I don't like the Perkster nearly as much as I liked Don
Doherty, but I'd hate to see the program die.

Call or write today!
