Dear Fellow Ugandans,
Greetings from Greening Uganda. The 2ND Season rains are on till December. If you're considering to invest in commercial forestry for Eucalyptus and Pine, avocado, Ginger, Coffee, please note the following:-
EUCALYPTUS:
It is a multipurpose tree species, that can be harvested for Construction poles & roofing poles at 3 years, Firewood at 2-3 years, utility poles (Umeme transmission poles), at 5-6 years, and timber at 9-15 years.
ESTABLISHMENT & MANAGEMENT:
1. You can establish an eucalyptus plantation at a spacing of 3x3m, and you will get approximately 450 trees per acre, this is mainly if you're aiming at planting for timber and you want your trees to grow big very first
2. You can establish an eucalyptus plantation at a spacing of 2.5x2.5m, and you will get approximately 640 trees per acre, this is mainly if you're aiming at planting for transmission poles/timber and you want your trees to grow big very first
3. You can establish an eucalyptus plantation at a spacing of 2x2m, and you will get approximately 1000 trees per acre, this is mainly if you're aiming at planting for construction poles or PROGRESSIVE HARVESTING, at 3 years you can do thinning and remove all bad trees and sale them for firewood or construction poles, at 5-6 years, harvest utility poles and leave the rest to grow for timber harvesting.
EUCALYPTUS SUB-SPECIES:
1. Grandis Fortportal: It is mainly grown in low lying areas e.g. valleys, water logged or flood plains
2. Grandis South Africa: It is a highland species e.g. does well in highlands or call it hills
3. Camaldulensis: This species grows well in areas that receive low rainfall, it is drought tolerant, resistant to termites
4. CLONES GU's: These are mainly raised through cuttings and the main commercial sub species here are GU7/8, they thrive so well in areas that receive rainfall
5. CLONES GC's: These are mainly raised through cuttings and the main commercial sub species here are GC550/796/1, these are universal clones, they can thrive so well both in Heavy rainfall areas and in dry areas, they are drought tolerant'
PINE:
If you're interested in venturing in Commercial Pine Growing, please note, it is limited in purpose, mainly for timber which commercially comes at between 10 to 15 years, for good timber yields, you might have to wait for longer gestation periods e.g. 20 years. Despite the limitations, you might possess land that can only support Growing of pine.
MELIA VOLKENSII HARDWOOD
We also have Melia Vulkensis, it matures at 9 years with red mahogany timber, it is drought and termite tolerant
