Subject: SOPA blackout
To:
nationalgen...@googlegroups.comOccupy Houston just snapped to the fact that we should join the blackout tomorrow, and we're scrambling to get stuff in place to join it. I hope all the Occupys are on board.
Our explanatory text is being finalized. It's below as it currently stands. I'm sure most of y'all's Occupys already have a plan, but I figured I'd send this email just in case...
Peace,
Amy
For the entire day of Wed,
Jan 18, in solidarity with Wikipedia, Reddit, and many other
organizations that understand the threat SOPA/PIPA poses to our civil
liberties, Occupy Houston will be blacking out our Facebook page,
website, Twitter and Livestream feeds, and Tumblr blog.
SOPA/PIPA are legislation under consideration in the House and Senate
this week. Ostensibly written to address internet piracy, their language
is so broad and so vague that their implementation would violate the
First Amendment, censor and even cripple the Internet, enable big
businesses to snuff out competition without due process of law, and put
dissident communities living under autocratic regimes in even greater
danger than they already are.
Occupy Houston condemns these
bills and urges all who support free speech to call their elected
officials and/or sign the petition http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_internet/. To join the
internet protest as an individual, follow the directions here http://ibnlive.in.com/blogs/soumyadipchoudhury/2805/63086/wikipedia-blackout-on-january-18-heres-what-you-can-do.html to blackout your twitter and Facebook accounts for the day.
