Last week, the County Council voted to extend the old zoning ordinance for two years to appease the development community. Despite years of diligent work and collaboration among various stakeholders—community members, government agencies, and developers—to formulate a current zoning ordinance that reflects our collective vision for growth and development, a majority of the Council member (6-5) voted to extend the use of the old zoning ordinance for an additional two years. This decision was made to appease the development community, a move that undermines the extensive effort and resources our community has invested since 2014 to establish guidelines that serve our best interests. I cast my vote against this measure. My decision stems from a steadfast belief that our community deserves to have its voice heard and respected, especially when it comes to decisions that shape the landscape of our county. The reluctance of developers to adhere to the new zoning ordinance and the recent extension allowing the continued use of the outdated ordinance are concerning trends that we must address together.
It is clear that a dialogue is necessary to ensure that our zoning process serves the well-being of Prince George’s County and its residents. To this end, I invite you to join me, Councilman Tom Dernoga, Councilwoman Krystal Oriadha, and Councilman Ed Burroughs for a crucial discussion on how we can advocate for and achieve the quality development our community needs and deserves.
This meeting will be an opportunity for us to come together as a community to voice our concerns, share our ideas, and shape a path forward that ensures our development policies reflect our collective goals and aspirations. Your input is invaluable in this process, and together, I am confident we can work towards a future that benefits us all.
