I applaud the actions of the governor in this one, and I continue to be disappointed at the rest of the crowd. Endless forgiveness and second chances are a hallmark of public life in the county, and I’m sick and tired of it. It is VERY rare for an elected or appointed official here to step up and actually take responsibility for something. Witness Mel (who, at one point, I had a great deal of respect for) who has not said a word. He kept all his issues quiet as long as he could, and has made no effort to level with the community at all. Not so much as an apology, no “I made a mistake” or anything - not even via an office mouthpiece.
ANY public official - appointed, elected, or what - has responsibilities to the people and the office. Those responsibilities include leading by example and living/working to a higher standard. It is my opinion that we’ve seen failure after failure on both points. The examples being set continue to stink. There’s been a lot of looking the other way here, and that’s got to stop. The fact that most of the people looking the other way are Democrats, and most of the people getting a pass have been Democrats, may or may not be instructive. It’s what it is - call it partisan if you want, but I think the facts speak for themselves.I remain disappointed and disgusted.sbfOn Dec 14, 2016, at 10:15 AM, 'Lorraine Yuriar' theky...@yuriar.com [PG-Politics] <PG-Po...@yahoogroups.com> wrote:True. Mel is elected, and Caldwell was appointed. Caldwell asked an officer if he could make the situation go away, while Mel fled the scene. Caldwell is still maintaining his innocence, which is why the governor forced him to resign. Progressive MD has called for Mel’s resignation, but Rushern has called it a mere blip, and said Mel has a great political future ahead of him.
It’s just interesting to me, the reaction to the two men. Honestly, I don’t see much of a reaction (other than the governor) to either man’s situation. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing…. But it does intrigue me.
Also, it’s sad that we the voters have no recourse to force a Politian out of county office. We should. They work for us, we should be able to gather signatures & petition to force a resignation.

Really? Are you serious? First as an appointed official one is able to be replaced, the other was elected and cannot be forced out. Second why someone who serves at the pleasure of the governor had to only be forced out after attempting to bribe a police officer is ridiculous.
Don't bring partisan politics into this.

FWIW – When the police report in the liquor board chairman’s dui arrest came to light this morning, Gov Larry Hogan called him and pretty much forced him to resign. So there’s that. It intrigues me to note that one was a Republican, nominated by a Republican Governor, then forced to resign by said governor. The other, a Democrat, elected by a primarily democrat citizenry, being given cover by other democrats in leadership. Just something I’ve noticed.

I have a little bit LESS understanding of the peers of such officials who continue to help cover up their wrongdoing.
