Position Overview:
Teach at 2 elementary schools in the David Douglas and/or Portland Public School Districts: 22 hrs/week, M-Th with occasional weekend events, through the school year and variable summer work, including 2 weeks paid training starting August 19, 2024.
Garden Educators teach hands-on garden lessons to elementary students and lead garden maintenance and school community engagement with the dedicated support of the Education Director and Site Coordinator.

Daily work will include :
Teaching PreK-5th grade students in 2 school gardens.
Managing and tending 2 school gardens.
Cultivating and facilitating school and family engagement in the gardens.
Basic administrative duties including tracking forms, evaluations, and school communications.
Participating in Grow Portland staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
Who are we looking for?
Folks passionate about teaching children in outdoor settings, gardening, food & environmental justice.
Teaching/leadership experience with elementary-aged students (outdoors preferred).
Garden/farming/environmental education or related experience preferred but not required.
Commitment to equity, justice, diversity, and inclusion efforts in all organizational activities, ideally with experience working with diverse communities and/or reflecting communities we partner with.
Clear communicator, both written and verbally (bonus if you speak/write in a language other than English!).
Excited to learn and grow, and unafraid to ask questions.
Passion for teamwork/collaboration while also able to work independently.
Access to reliable transportation with willingness to transport garden supplies.
Basic computer skills and access to a reliable computer and/or device for managing email, phone communication, and shared documents.
Ability to comply with all school district & state requirements regarding safety protocols and background checks.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb, squat, and stand for long periods of time, and work in variable weather conditions.
Priority hiring to those with diverse lived experience that reflects the identities of our school communities.
