Five students have been expelled in the Beverly Hills Unified School District following a special meeting of the board to address fake nude photos of students apparently generated using artificial intelligence.The Beverly Hills Police Department continues to investigate.
For example, the Beverly Hills Police Department is currently investigating an incident in which students shared fake photos of their classmates. However, the state law does not directly address AI-generated content. As a result, the five teenagers involved in the incident were expelled from school.
"Those who are sharing the photos through group chats continue to promulgate this ominous use of AI and the harmful consequences it has on our school community members," administrators at the west-end high school told parents on Tuesday. "The creation and distribution of this material could result in disciplinary measures."
Officials at the school say student pictures have been copied from social media sites, then altered using artificial intelligence to make the person in the photo appear nude. The photos have been shared through group chats, officials say.
"I'm not really surprised this happened, because AI has come a long way. A lot of this stuff happens on social media," said Virginia Mathus, 18, a Grade 12 student at the school. "My parents asked if I knew anything about it or if I saw the photos. It's pretty scary because I share pictures online, and anyone can get it and edit it."
All of the students CBC News spoke to said if the student or students responsible are caught they should be suspended from school. "It's just not fun. That's private, and it's not funny or nice," Mathus said.
One student who said was targeted with AI-generated nude photos said she feels humiliated by the actions of her peers, though she doesn't know who is responsible. "It's super frustrating because it's not you, and you want people to believe it's not you, and even if they know it's not you, it's still embarrassing," the 16-year-old said.
Teachers speak to students about how not to use artificial intelligence to cheat on tests and assignments, but not about the more creative and insidious ways it can be used, the teen said. "It's not okay. The one that was made of me was not real and people say, 'It's not real, get over it,' but it's still embarrassing. I'm humiliated. My parents are humiliated."
"I haven't seen the images but I know people who have. People are saying this shouldn't be happening," Gardner said. "We need to learn more about AI to stop it because it's just going to get worse. People are doing it for attention. They're spreading it just to get attention and to embarrass other kids."
North knows one of the young women affected, and said she is not doing well. "That can ruin a person's whole career. She's in pain right now from what's going on," he said. "We don't get taught enough about AI at all."
While it's important for all schools to get ahead of the issue, parents need to have discussions with their children about what they post online and the impacts their posts could have on others, she said, adding that she believes tech companies that make AI tools also have a responsibility to be more careful in how widely their products are available.
School administrators here are asking parents to speak to their kids about the dangers of social media and artificial intelligence, as well as about the inappropriateness of creating and sharing such images in group chats.

Or perhaps that photo arrives at your email, but with the demand for a large sum of money to make it go away. There is no such thing as paying for the negative anymore. Blackmailers can just remanufacture any scenario they wish, and the burden of truth rests on you. It is extremely difficult and expensive to take something off the internet once posted.
There is some effort on the part of the government to address the need for personal privacy protection. In June of this year, the Senate introduced the No Section 230 Immunity for AI Act. This bipartisan legislation states that Section 230 immunity will not apply to claims based on generative AI. Section 230 shields websites from liability for content posted by their users and is believed by many to be the reason for internet social media companies flourishing. So, there is the hint of regulatory events which would either reduce unwanted privacy invasion, or at least provide legal avenues to pursue if an individual is affected by inappropriate use of AI.

They should take your report seriously and remove the image - you should also be able to block the people who posted it. If you know the person who is making the images and they go to your school or college then you could also talk to someone you trust at your school about it. Even though these things are happening online, your school might be able to help make this person stop.
The law isn't very clear about this kind of images. It's illegal to make, share or download sexual images of anyone under 18 years old - but when it comes to edited pictures, there aren't many laws about them yet.
There are some laws that might be helpful though- it could be considered harassment if this person is creating fake nudes of you a lot, in which case the police might be able to help. It could help to talk to the police because they might know how to get this person to stop.
