Whatare pencil grades?

Pencil grades tell you how light/hard and dark/soft a graphite pencil is. You might have noticed that graphite pencils have a H or B grade. The H stands for hard and the B stands for blackness. H pencils are harder and produce lighter lines because they contain more filler and less graphite. Pencils that fall into the B grade, on the other hand, make a darker mark because they're softer and don't contain as much filler.

Have you thought about using pan pastels as the underpainting for your color pencils? They are somewhat transparent, and can go on much more thinly than the sticks. I would think the color pencils might push the sticks around rather than go over them (unless you just rub them in lightly.) Pan Pastels can be mixed somewhat like oils, you could get some nice effects. Maybe try just a few to see if you like them.

When using 2D animation in 2.8, my airbrush and soft pencil tool always produce the color black, regardless of material chosen. The other drawing tools are accurate. and draw/paint what I've selected. Any idea what I may be doing wrong, or missing? Thanks so much.

I've figured it out. Airbrush and Soft Pencil are Dots material. If you have only Line materials, blender will switch to the default "Dots Stroke" material, which is black. Change the color of this material.

The design here is pretty stereotypical, with the barrel being a thin, featureless tube of black plastic that tapers at one end to a plastic lead pipe. Near this end is a rubber grip in one of a few (5 in my case) colors that is narrower in the middle and has ridges toward the end, both ostensibly to help with grip, and they succeed in being barely noticeable. On the back end is a colored plastic push-advance mechanism (that matches the grip) with integrated pocket clip and eraser holder. This bit can be removed to expose the lead-holding tube that contains 2 extra leads (for a total of 3 per pencil). The clip is nothing spectacular, with most of the necessary information on it, and fairly brittle. But I feel the entire end piece would fling off before it broke.

I actually prefer these to the more notable Bic velocity pencils. They may be of lesser quality in respect to the pencil barrel plastic but they deliver the same quality writing and are easier to hold not to mention pretty to look at. I love the colors.

The 9000s are smart hexagonal pencil, in gold and cream on a dark green casing. My favourite fact about them is that their colour scheme was chosen by Count Alexander von Faber-Castell to match his military uniform! They are light to hold and have their grade printed clearly on every other facet so that they are easy to identify. You can buy a version of the HB and B grades with these soft little erasers on top.

Lumograph pencils never scratch or feel gritty and as they rise up the scale the shades become darker in a most reliable and uniform manner. They have the widest range of grades of all of the pencils and go all the way up to a very black 12B, although grades above a 9B can be hard to source in the UK. The Hamilton Pen company carries all of the grades. With such a wide tonal range you are really covered whether you like to draw more lightly or more darkly. If you like to blend your pencils, you will find that they smudge fairly well.

The grades become darker very rapidly as they rise up through the grading scale, and they end up even darker than the Staedtlers in the softer B grades. Therefore you get quite an extreme degree of tonal gradation between the lightest and darkest pencils. My only complaint was a slight lack of consistency rising up through the grades. Whilst the lighter grades had felt very hard (maybe a bit too hard) there seemed to be a rather abrupt jump between the 2B and 3B grades where the consistency changed noticeably and the pencils suddenly became much smoother.
