S.W.A.T. is an American crime action drama television series, based on the 1975 television series of the same name created by Robert Hamner and developed by Rick Husky. The new series was developed by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan,[1] and premiered on CBS on November 2, 2017.[2] The series is produced by Original Film, CBS Studios and Sony Pictures Television. In April 2021, the series was renewed for a fifth season which premiered on October 1, 2021.[3][4] In April 2022, CBS renewed the series for a sixth season which premiered on October 7, 2022.[5][6] In May 2023, CBS renewed S.W.A.T. for a seventh and final season.[7] In April 2024, the final season decision was reversed and the show was renewed for an eighth season.[8] The eighth season is scheduled to premiere on October 18, 2024.[9] As of May 17, 2024,[update] 141 episodes of S.W.A.T. have aired, concluding the seventh season.
Developed by Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, S.W.A.T. puts the spotlight on Hondo (Moore), an ex-Marine and Los Angeles native who is suddenly promoted to team leader of the Special Weapons and Tactics unit of the L.A. Police Department in an effort to ease tensions between the community and the police after an accidental shooting of an unarmed Black teenager. Like with many network shows, the wait for S.W.A.T.'s return to TV screens has been a longer one than usual because of the delays from the actors and writers strikes. But we're almost back in action, and we'll keep you updated on all the significant updates on S.W.A.T.'s final season.
Could S.W.A.T. go on after Season 7 after all? Shemar Moore seems to think so. Speaking with ET, Moore, the show's biggest cheerleader, said, "We hate to see it go. But again, I'm not quite sure it's the end, but that's just me." He added, "I know the door isn't completely closed."
"We premiere shortly after the Super Bowl. And if the numbers are good, maybe we'll change some minds and maybe we can keep on trucking," Moore said. And he knows how fan outcry can affect the show, since S.W.A.T. was canceled after Season 6 before CBS changed its mind. "I know the fans made noise... I think they were a huge part of it."
In casting news, veteran cast members Kenny Johnson and Alex Russell, who play Dominique Luca and Jim Street, respectively, have been moved down from series regulars to recurring status for the final episodes, says TV Line. But there's a reason, according to showrunner Andrew Dettman. With just 13 episodes to wrap up the series, Dettman wanted to make sure everyone got thorough send-offs, indicating that we'll see Luca and Street depart the show earlier than others, but at least they won't get the short shrift.
While Hondo and his S.W.A.T. team successfully apprehended cartel leader Sancho Zamora (Steven Bauer) in the Season 6 finale, that wasn't all there was to celebrate. In the closing episode of the season (and thankfully not the series), Hondo proposed to Nichelle (Rochelle Aytes) after confessing to her at their daughter's christening that much of his happiness was thanks to her. The pair were now officially engaged. With Season 7 on the horizon, and it being the final chapter for S.W.A.T., could we see Hondo and Nichelle saying "I do"?
It's safe to assume all of the main cast members will return for the final season. However, Alex Russell and Kenny Johnson have been downgraded to recurring status for the final season and won't appear in all the episodes.
S.W.A.T. season 7 is on the way following a brief cancelation, and there's much speculation about what awaits when it returns. Debuting in 2017, the Shemar Moore-led action series concerns Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson as he is tasked with leading the Los Angeles Police Department's prestigious Special Weapons and Tactics division. Sharing a fictional universe with the FX series The Shield, S.W.A.T. quickly set itself apart from the usual procedural fare because of its emphasis on action and a grittier approach to storytelling. The series snagged a few Primetime Emmy nominations and proved to be a big hit for CBS.
Despite the show's success during its more than half a decade on the air, the journey to S.W.A.T. season 7 was rocky. In May 2023, S.W.A.T. was canceled by CBS ahead of the season 6 finale, despite the fact its already strong ratings continued to improve. However, not long after the shocking misguided cancelation, CBS renewed the show for S.W.A.T. season 7 following an outpouring of disappointment from fans and Hondo himself, Shemar Moore. While major changes will likely accompany the next season of S.W.A.T., its renewal is proof that the show has a dedicated audience that wants more.
As the series nears its final premiere date, the latest news finds a S.W.A.T. supporting actor promoted to a lead role for the last season. Even though the final season will focus on the regular squad and their last adventures together, Anna Enger Ritch, who plays Zoe Powell, will be given a promotion. Debuting in season 5, Ritch's Powell recurred heavily in season 6, and will now take a step up and become a lead cast member for S.W.A.T. season 7.
In other S.W.A.T. season 7 cast news, Lina Esco's return gets an uncertain update which seemingly suggests the fan-favorite won't return. Producer Andy Dettman addressed Esco's return as Christina "Chris" Alonso for the final season, simply stating "I don't know". Esco departed S.W.A.T. in season 5 to pursue other projects and has not returned since. Chris Alonso's return would help cap off the final season, but that remains uncertain.
S.W.A.T. season 7 was delayed along with most of Hollywood as a result of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes which shut down the industry throughout most of 2023. Though the landmark final season was supposed to arrive in fall 2023, it will now return to the screen at 8 pm on Friday, February 16th, 2024.
The S.W.A.T. season 7 cast is going to be filled with familiar faces, and it can be assumed that the bulk of the main stars will return for the final outing. Heading up the series from the very beginning, Shemar Moore will certainly be back in his signature role as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson. It has also been confirmed that newcomer Anna Enger Ritch has been promoted to a series regular, and she will reprise her role as Zoe Powell for the final season.
Like many procedurals, S.W.A.T. typically wraps up its biggest storylines at the end of each season and launches a new overarching plot at the start of the next. Season 6 ended with notorious Mexican cartel kingpin Sancho Zamora being arrested after his revenge-fueled reign of terror, and it is highly unlikely that he will factor into S.W.A.T. season 7.
However, one development in season 6 that will be followed up on in season 7 is Hondo's proposal to Nichelle, which she gleefully accepts. S.W.A.T. season 7 has the chance to give Hondo and his crew a fitting ending, which was nearly robbed from them when the show was canceled. The opportunity for familiar characters from the past to return is still on the table, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
Though S.W.A.T. was miraculously revived from cancelation by CBS, the decision to bring the series back for season 7 was accompanied by the announcement that this one would be the last. S.W.A.T. season 7 was uncanceled by CBS, but the series was given a definitive end after the network dealt with the cancelation backlash. It will be a truncated season with only 13 episodes, as opposed to the usual 22, and it is clear that the network doesn't have a long-term plan for the show.
As its numbers have consistently indicated, S.W.A.T. is an incredibly popular series with a dedicated fanbase, and it could possibly find new life elsewhere. Though the ownership entanglements were what got the show canceled in the first place, its arrival on Netflix could give the series an even bigger long-term bump that might facilitate some sort of revival after season 7. It isn't unusual for streaming platforms to bring back network series that have been given the boot, and S.W.A.T. could be the streamer's next target if it is legally possible.
In actual fact, the series was initially cancelled in 2023 following season 6, but this decision was reversed at the last minute to give the show a sendoff with a seventh and final season. Following a campaign led by Moore, the show's other stars and its fans, the show was saved once again, and in April 2024 was renewed for season 8.
Moore said in a statement following the news: \"SWAT IS BACK! BELIEVE IN MIRACLES! I am so proud of this show and the people and variables it has taken to make this show what it is and has become. I am so grateful to the fans around the world who have supported, watched, enjoyed and rooted for SWAT!
In the UK, seasons have tended to follow on Sky Max and NOW some months afterwards, meaning we could be waiting until some time in 2025 for new episodes. We will keep this page updated once we have any more concrete news regarding the air dates for season 8.
Jay Harrington will also be back as Sergeant David 'Deacon' Kay, after a surprise decision to stay at the end of the season 8 finale. The character had been expected to retire, but in an interview with TVLine, showrunner Andrew Dettman explained that it was always the plan for him to change his mind.
He explained: \"Yeah, he [Deacon] was always going to be there. We knew Jay [Harrington] would be around. That was the one thing where I questioned myself a bit, the storyline of him retiring and coming back.
\"Change is hard; so now we have some OGs, myself as Hondo, Deacon [Jay Harrington], Hicks [Patrick St. Esprit], Tan [David Lim] and some newbies. But regarding those people that you miss, nobody died. And in the world of Hollywood, anything can happen.\"
