It has been 100 years since Mary Pickford was first dubbed the Queen of the Movies. At the time, the phrase simply noted her popularity in the huge field of actors who appeared in short films shown at nickelodeons. Though it was a gratifying compliment, the title had inherently ignoble associations. After all, most people considered the movies to be a low form of entertainment. Pickford winced at the label, but it was remarkably prophetic of her future triumphs.
Queen Victoria is one of the most enduring symbols of the British royal family, 120 years after her death. You can physically see her across the Commonwealth. These are some of my favourite movies and TV shows about Queen Victoria. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but they are some that I have really enjoyed. I think for the most part, they should be fairly easy to rent or purchase in most countries. Note: All of the synopses and posters here are from IMDB.
While it may not seem like it has a lot in common with Queen & Slim, the Spanish film directed by Alfonso Cuaron shares one major connection: They are both road movies. Y Tu Mamá También follows two young men as they go on a summer road trip with an older woman.

Considering that Queen Latifah's acting has spanned that past three decades, it's safe to say that her filmography is full of both good and bad. Between End of the Road and The Cookout, there is no shortage of Queen Latifah movies that miss the mark entirely. That being said, there are plenty of phenomenal films where she absolutely killed it. These are the best Queen Latifah movies, ranked.
Ten years ago, the queen was depicted in a fictional setting in the opening of the Isles of Wonder telecast of the 2012 Summer Olympics, directed by Golden Globe winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire). The telecast, previously recorded at Buckingham Palace, showed the monarch walking alongside secret agent James Bond (Daniel Craig, Golden Globe nominee for best actor for Knives Out, 2020) and boarding a helicopter to parachute over the Millennium Stadium (of course, it was a stuntwoman).
On June 4, 2022, the 96-year-old monarch reconnected with pop culture by sharing tea with Paddington Bear (digitally animated) on her balcony. The scene was broadcast worldwide on television as thousands of spectators in the courtyards of Buckingham Palace cheered their queen.
Queen were a perfect fit for this film, for the simple reason that both the script and the band were tongue-in-cheek. The producer, Dino De Laurentiis, asked Queen to produce a soundtrack over which they were given complete control. They came up with a great theme song that pretty much everyone around the world recognises, and they also made some amazing incidental music that still turns up in movies today.
Mary could do nothing to escape her marriage to Bothwell. But the Scottish people did not take kindly to the queen remarrying so soon after she had been widowed. Critics like John Knox portrayed her as promiscuous. By 1567, Mary was forced to abdicate the throne to her one-year-old son and subsequently imprisoned. Bothwell fled to Denmark and died in prison there 11 years later. Mary eventually sailed to England, hoping that Elizabeth would protect her.
Parents need to know that Queen of Katwe is the inspiring true story of a girl from the slums of Uganda who becomes a chess champion. It has strong themes of empathy, humility, integrity, perseverance, and teamwork. But there are also many hard scenes that little kids might not understand -- or could be upset by -- making it best for tweens and up. A boy who's run over by a motorcycle gets stitches without painkillers, another child is almost swept away in a flash flood, and a teen girl is lured from her family by an untrustworthy man who promises her a better life. The central family is homeless and must sleep on the street, and some scenes include background drinking and smoking. But in the end this is a beautifully told, entertaining drama about a strong, smart, loyal girl that will give families a lot to talk about.
