I haven't yet listened to the entire audiobook but I keep running
across it on my iPod. Just now I decided to start listening to it .

I am SO close to this book that I am constantly surprised as I listen
to the audiobook. It's amazing.

I "hear" the entire book in Jim's voice. It is surprising to hear
someone else read it, and to hear different inflections, emphasis on
different points.

Honestly, I wish I'd had some say in the recording of the audiobook,
but at the same time, I'm thankful I didn't, because the audiobook
allows me to look at things differently.

xoxo

If I had the equipment I might try the audio book. Hopefully someone I know who has one will at least let me hear a little out of curiousity. But I agree not hearing it read by Jim would be odd
and, to me, pointless. Although I won't knock it til I try it. I can hear Jim's voice in my head pretty well and if it gets fainter I go to Catholic Boy and listen to some spoken pieces or even just play one of his albums which are in my computer and ready to go at at any time. This helped me get into THE PETTING ZOO-hearing it read in Jim's voice in my mind. Until I was totally enraptured and into it and reading but seeing it like a movie. If anyone reading Jim has trouble hearing him in their head just listen to him read or put on CATHOLIC BOY and follow the lyrics. I've been writing down the lyrics and then typing them and printing them out my goal
being to learn how to read Jim's poetry the way he spoke it and wrote it. It's fun and another way to enjoy his work-all he's given me/us. I, too, wish you had had some say in the recording of the audiobook. To me, I really believe you should be the last word on anything to do with Jim
although I realize it just ain't that easy. You and Rosemary. The end. Be well and thanks for the
continued info. That's what makes you the undisputed WEBMASTER: You created this and bring it to us, the fans, or we who feel connected to this amazing guy Jim Carroll. Be Well  joey

another suggestion to remember Jim's voice, is to replay Basketball Diaries, the movie, and watch the Frankie Pinewater scene (Jim's cameo).  that brings it all back.  I was one of the lucky ones, a person who lives far away from New York in Chicago, (where he rarely read) and I actually saw him read at the Cubby Bear on Clark!  he was reading from the just published Downtown Diaries, so it was 1988.  but, yeah, you always remember that voice.  (if anyone is interested, I have a funny anecdote about this reading).

also, I captured Cassie's two recordings of Jim talking about the novel he's writing.  it's on an old computer, but it's still there!  I used listening to him talk about the Petting Zoo to get inspired for my own stuff.

finally, just looking at Jim's pictures sometimes will invoke his voice

oh, and Cassie, I think I still have the Tribune interview with Jim from the time of that reading.  would you be interested in a copy if I can find it?

Wow, I never thought about doing the audio book thing.  I don't yet have a Kindle but thought this replaced audio books.  I guess not!

Clarie - I do think we want to hear your funny anecdote about the reading at Cubby Bear!  I know I would love to hear it, thanks in advance!!

Good idea Clarie. I envy you. I would love a tape of his voice talking about anything but THE
PETTING ZOO! How cool! Idiot me used to have breakfast right next to him in 1984 (no, not
the Friday club. I wasn't lucky enough to meet that group). Or probably knew some but didn't
know about the meetings. I remember his voice then but I was in bad shape-I thought Jim was this genius who wrote THE BASKETBALL DIARIES then became a rock star. Oh wasted days!
And I had just begun writing poetry! Maybe I would have continued if I'd known enough to talk
to him about it. I will always remember how modest he was-you would never have known he was anything special if it were not for his presence or charisma. Need a better word. Treasure
those recordings! Peace    joey
