The most important concept in PZ is "the zone." When I was there in
Jim's apartment, working on the very rough draft, that concept was not
coming through clearly through the murk of the draft and I asked Jim
to explain something or other. He went on a rant and explained "the
zone" in animated detail that I hope I will never forget.
In short, "the zone" can be achieved through any number of means --
many of which are described in PZ. One example is sports, when you
get to that place where you don't have to think and just can't miss
(described in detail in Basketball Diaries). Jim explained that "the
zone" is when you are connected to God and to everyone and everything
in the universe. Billy is desperately trying to get back to "the
zone" in PZ.
I'm writing this message tonight because of the lyrics Paul McCartney
and/or George Harrison added to John Lennon's "Free as a Bird." I
don't know who wrote the lyrics (I'm guessing McCartney), but both
sang them. No doubt, when asked to do this, the Lennon piece made the
lyric-writer feel very melancholic and whatnot, so that no doubt needs
to be taken into account, but the gist of the lyric is what happened
to the magic?
I think this lyric is about "the zone."
Thoughts?
