Hello, fans of Jim Carroll and "The Petting Zoo." I've been thinking of the book (again) this week because of an exhibit opening at one of our Dallas museums, the Meadows at SMU. I'm excited about it because, for one thing, I'm looking forward to connecting with a part of Jim Carroll there. Some rare paintings by Velázquez are on display now and I intend to go see them tomorrow. Just wanted to let you in on my plan. :)

Jim starts his story with this: "All the trouble, of course, began with Velázquez."

Thank you Jenny. I wouldn't have known without your message. I look forward to seeing the exhibit.

I know you have seen it by now. Did you love it?

Well, it didn't send me stumbling out onto the lawn in search of animal rescue, but yes, I did love it. I wasn't aware that what appears to be the artist's "audition for the king" as royal portrait painter is actually a permanent painting, a bust of Philip IV, in the collection. I also didn't know, or had forgotten, that the name "Meadows" actually comes from the Spanish "Prado," which is the name of the museum in Madrid partnering with the Dallas musuem. I managed to take a (clandestine, it turns out) photo of the full-size painting on loan from the Spanish museum.

(See below. I hope it comes through!)
