Correction: Posting about S. Korea registering Jindo dog as a livestock.with UN FAO

Correction:
Elly Maynard with Sirius Global Animal Organisation Trust
(http://www.siriusgao.org) advised me that S. Korea has registered
Jindo with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN
FAO) as a dog that is used in herding, hunting and protection of
livestock and not as a livestock for human consumption. She has
verified this with the UN FAO. My previous posting was based on the
reports by several Korean News that left out this detail and just
reported Jindo being registered as a livestock.

However, this is another example of how inconsistant S. Korea's
position has been regarding the classification of dogs which is at the
heart of the dog meat illegalization issue.

"Dogs are defined as “Livestock” according to the Ministry for Food,
Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAF). The purpose of keeping them
as livestock--for breeding, killing, or whatever--is irrelevant to the
law. However, dogs are not defined as “Livestock” under the Livestock
Processing Law. That is, they are not listed as livestock that can be
officially processed as food. Therefore, it can be inferred it is
illegal to process dogs for food, but there is no law expressly
forbidding it."

Although Jindo has a status as a national treasure, no certain breed
of dogs is immune from the horrible fate of being slaughtered and
consumed as meat in S. Korea. You will see all kinds of dogs including
Jindos at dog farms, markets and restaurants in S. Korea.
