Hey everybody!!!

I've got an update on this Thursday's show at Tony Starlight's! Thanks to their new change in policy (and also thanks to a lot of hard work by the Musicians' Union lobbying the OLCC on behalf of all of us who earn our livings by making music) Tony Starlight's Supperclub is now open to All Ages until 9:30! What that means is the first set (starting at 7:30) will be open to minors. I'm excited about this change; there aren't enough opportunities for young people to hear good music performed live; my own jazz journey started when I heard Gene Harris playing piano, I think I was all of about 14 at the time. These days, many high-school-aged music students don't get to experience live music nearly enough! They're taught in school how to play the notes, but there's really no substitute for the type of inspiration that comes from seeing and hearing musicians perform the music live. So please bring the entire family out this Thursday for a night of great music by some of the top players in the Pacific Northwest!

Thursday, July 22
Tony Starlight's Supperclub
3728 NE Sandy (in Portland's historic Hollywood district)
1st show: 7:30pm (all ages welcome)
2nd show: 9:30pm (21 and over)

Pete Petersen & the Porkpie Septet return to Tony Starlight's Supperclub for an evening of jazz and merriment on Thursday, July 22nd. The Portland-born saxophonist has been touring and performing all over the US, most recently returning from a multi-state East Coast tour with Seattle pianist/bandleader Solomon Douglas that included performance dates in Washington DC, Philadelphia, and New York City. Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear Pete and his band perform in their own hometown!

In addition to performing selections from the upcoming as-yet-unreleased CD "the I-5 Drive", Pete and the band will draw from their ever-growing library of music, including jazz classics and originals from every era and beyond. The group has a no-holds-barred take-no-prisoners attitude toward their choice in musical selections; their range of material includes some very unorthodox additions to the jazz oeuvre. For example, their book includes a 1930's style "cutting contest" tenor battle set to the iconic "battle music" from Star Trek. Whether they're swingin' a hard-bop groove a la Blakey's Messengers, or kickin' a jazzed-up rendition of the "Mr Rogers' Neighborhood" theme, this band is guaranteed to put forth some of the best jazz music you're likely to hear at this or any other club in Portland.

"Picture this: it's 1930's Kansas City. You've got the front row table at the swankiest joint in town. Bill Basie's ticklin' the ivories, Lester Young's on the sax, a young kid named Charlie Parker is on the sidelines hoping he'll be able to join in someday. Suddenly, in walks Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins and they get into something good, and through a mysterious series of eddies in the space-time continuum, they all start riffing on 1970's TV themes. This band sounds kinda like that."

Band members include many of the top-call "A-list" musicians in Portland, including:

Bryan Dickerson, alto sax (Glenn Miller Orchestra, Portland Jazz Orchestra, Lily Wilde Orchestra, Art Abrams, Soul Vaccination)
Greg Garrett, trumpet (Artie Shaw, Art Abrams Swing Machine, Soul Vaccination)
Ben Medler, trombone (director - Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra)
Andre St James, bass (Sonny Rollins, Sun Ra, St James/Woods Nonet, Mel Brown Septet)
Joe Millward (Swingline Cubs, Rendezvous, Linda Lee Michelet)
Eddy Pierce, drums (St James/Woods Nonet, Geno Michaels, Sandy Dennison)

Also joining the band for the evening will be the vocalist from Boise, Idaho; the lovely ms Amy Weber. Amy has the kind of smoky, sexy, sultry voice that's reminiscent of Diana Krall or Joss Stone, and a stage presence that captivates with a glance; she'll give you goosebumps in all the best ways... She's been taking her local music scene by storm and we're proud to be able to bring her to Portland for this one-night-only performance!

Praise for Pete Petersen & the Porkpie Septet:
"Petersen's an accomplished player. He has a big, throaty tone and a blowzy, swashbuckling style with the conversational touch of old-time sax players." (Paul de Barros, Seattle Times jazz critic)

"Get ready for some swinging, down the center of the groove, well-paced, scintillating straight ahead jazz and bop from a Portland cat who writes and plays in the best of the tradition. ...Every [tune] rings out with the joy of playing the real deal." (George Fendel, Jazz Society of Oregon writer/critic at large)

"This group, their arrangements, and musical choices are a big band at its best." (Mary Burlingame-producer/host, HomeGrown Live KMHD 89.1 FM The Jazz Station www.kmhd.fm)

Porkpie plays spirited, with enthusiasm and like they're having fun with it. Their album is a must have in my collection. (Tim "Java Man" Taylor KMHD 89.1 FM the Jazz Station)

Pete Petersen first became hooked on jazz & blues music as a teenager in Boise, Idaho, when he heard pianist Gene Harris playing in a local club. He later cut his musical teeth in Denver, Colorado, earning a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music, while going out at night to sit in with local jazz heavyweights like Bruno Carr, Keith Oxman, Ron Miles, and Stefan Karlsson. He was featured with the band Page IV backing up vocalist Kevin Mahogany on NPR's nationally syndicated JazzSet program. Since relocating to Portland, Oregon, in 1994, he has worked his way to the top of the city's renowned jazz scene. As a sideman, he has performed with a virtual “who's who” of jazz and swing notables from up and down the west coast, including Bay Area boogie- woogie legend Mitch Woods, swing diva Lily Wilde, the Portland Jazz Orchestra, Grammy-nominated saxophone sensation Patrick Lamb, and pianist/bandleader Solomon Douglas. He is currently a member of the horn section for award-winning blues songstress Ellen Whyte. He is regularly called to play in horn sections for nationally touring groups that run the length and breadth of the stylistic spectrum, from Lynyrd Skynyrd to the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. He arranged and performed on a recording co-produced by Howard Crosby, the nephew of legendary crooner Bing Crosby. As a leader, his band "Porkpie" has hit the national stage, playing jazz and swing festivals in Chicago, Denver, Seattle, and beyond. He has also been featured as a solo performer at jazz and blues festivals throughout the region, including a main-stage appearance at the 2009 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival. His critically-acclaimed latest CD release, entitled “Keep Your Hat On”, was released internationally on Pony Boy Records in January, 2008.
