I finally had to do it. Traded in the gas hog for something that is
more fuel efficient. I bought a 2008 Subaru Impreza Hatchback 5
speed. Its a great little car, gets 29.5 mpg for me vs the 17 I was
getting with the Ford Escape. Though I've lost the ground clearance
and height, I've gained maneuverability, handling, fuel economy, and a
more reliable vehicle.
I've raised my prices somewhat too and people seem to understand.
