Age: 10 Years
Altered? No
Intake date: 3/27/2026
Dog sociability: Dog social
China came to us on March 27th after her owner could no longer afford the veterinary care she urgently needed. She arrived with a large, ulcerated mammary mass along her abdomen that had been leaking and required medical intervention.
She has since undergone a full sedated exam with diagnostics, including bloodwork and radiographs. The large ventral mass appears to be external and not fully attached internally, which is promising for potential removal. However, she has multiple additional masses along her mammary chain, some of which are firm, multi-lobulated, and would be more complex to address surgically.
Her bloodwork is overall fairly stable for a dog in her condition, showing only mild anemia likely from chronic bleeding of the mass, along with mild indicators of inflammation. Importantly, there are no signs of active infection, and her thyroid levels are normal.
Radiographs did reveal a concerning finding near her heart, an oblong opaque area that could represent a mass or other abnormality. At this time, the origin and significance are unclear, and our veterinary team is not comfortable pursuing surgery.
Despite all of this, she is bright, active, and incredibly sweet. She is friendly, easy to handle, and seeks out affection, leaning into pets, enjoying scratches, and remaining relaxed and cooperative even during medical care. She does not act clinically ill, and her masses do not appear to cause her pain when handled.
Our veterinary team believes she deserves a chance. With her current quality of life still considered good.
