I have been having this exact same issue. It showed up after I upgraded to a new MacBook Pro and used a time machine backup to restore. I tried re-indexing outlook, tried rebuilding the Outlook main identity, ensured both Mojave and Outlook were the latest version (running Outlook 2019), and nothing worked. Today I wiped the entire hard drive of the new MacBookPro and re-installed a fresh version of OSX 10.14.6 as well as a fresh version of Outlook 2019 (version 16.27). I then downloaded mail directly from the Outlook/Exchange server after setting up the accounts and had the same problem, search still not working. So I went and re-indexed the Group Containers folder in library again and still nothing. This is a big problem and I'm at a loss as to how to fix it.

Another way to fix Outlook search is to repair your Outlook personal folder file (.PST) using the Inbox Repair tool. Outlook search may encounter issues if your Outlook personal folder file is corrupt.

In my experience, rebuilding and refreshing the Outlook search index usually gets things moving again. But if not, repairing the Outlook personal file is another reliable option when Outlook search isn't working.

Fortunately, Microsoft provides a tool called the Outlook search repair tool; that can help you fix these issues. In this blog post, we will walk you through how to use the Outlook search repair tool to fix search problems in Outlook.

Before you begin, make sure to close Outlook and any other Office applications that are running. That is important because the search repair tool needs exclusive access to your Outlook data files, and other applications may prevent it from working correctly.

After the repair process is complete, open Outlook and try using the search function to find an email or other data. If the search function is still not working correctly; you may need to repeat the repair process or try some additional troubleshooting steps.

In most cases, the MS Outlook search repair tool is powerful enough to fix search problems in Outlook. But in many cases, this tool fails to fix the problem. Thus, it is advisable to try to repair your Outlook data file. With a little bit of patience and persistence, you can get your search function working properly in no time!

Right now I am using Mac Mail in parallel to be able to search all my mails from exchange and use outlook mainly for calendars. It's a ****** setup, but at least it works for now. Hoping for software updates soon.

We've seen a few of these issues since Monday 5/4. Something else we noticed was that if you search "All Outlook Items" instead of the current mailbox the search seems to work. We tried rebuilding the search index, repairing Office, Windows updates, but the only thing that worked was to roll back to the previous version of Office. When we rolled back to the previous version of Office the search function worked again. Here's the Microsoft article on how to revert to an earlier version of Office: -us/help/2770432/how-to-revert-to-an-earlier-version-of-office-2013-... Opens a new window.

No this did not work for me. I even went back in, re clicked on outlook, re indexed and re started. The index only took a few seconds, the number of indexed items did not change and search still had no items
:(

spent 4 hours with level 2 tech trying to fix (had already spent 5 days trying to fix myself including rebuild, new profile, reinstall thru download and image, remove outlook from indexing options, checking services.msc settings for the search to be sure in included desktop, etc. Level 2 tech gave up and jumped at the chance when I told him to give up and take me back to 2013. had to reindex 2013 but everything works fine.

What a disappointment, I upgraded to 2016, I upgraded microsoft and now all I get is the same thing very sluggish and wont search all my emails, have re-index a dozen times nothing works, why put out a program with bugs, please fix it

I had Windows 10 with Outlook 2016 preinstalled, but had installed outlook 2007 over it and restored old .pst files and noticed outlook search not working. Step number 5 and 6 mentioned fixed the problem. Other steps had tried earlier but did not work. Thanks.

Alternatively, you can find outlook.exe in the default installation folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office version. Where Office version is Office15 if you are using Office 2013, Office14 for Office 2010 and so on.

  • Right-click on OUTLOOK.EXE, and then click Properties.
  • Switch to the Compatibility tab and be sure to clear the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" check box.
  • Click OK and try to start Outlook.
If you still cannot open the Outlook window and the same "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook" error persists, try to restore the previous version of the PST file. Of course, in this case some of your recent emails and appointments will be lost, but it seems to be a better alternative than no Outlook at all. So, right click on the Outlook.pst file and select Restore Previous Versions.Create a new Outlook profileIf neither repairing nor restoring the Outlook.pst file worked, you can create a new mail profile in order to see if it solves the problem. If it does, then you can copy your current Outlook data file (.pst or .ost) from the broken mail profile to the newly created one.

To open Outlook in safe mode, click on its icon holding the Ctrl key, or click paste outlook /safe in the search box and press Enter. Outlook will display a message asking you to confirm that you really want to start it in safe mode, click Yes.An alternative way is to use the outlook.exe /noextensions command, which basically means the same - start Outlook without any extensions.

When the Outlook indexing tool is not working or not functioning properly, It is required to check outlook Indexing Status. Like, it may not show the recent email search result due to the outlook email search which is not working. Further, it may display results like Outlook search by date or may show that items based on search criteria waiting to be indexed in the output panel. This indicates a problem with the Outlook Indexing services.

A corrupt Outlook data file (.pst) can cause severe issues including Outlook search problems. However, Outlook provides an Inbox Repair Tool or SCANPST.EXE to analyze and repair a corrupt or damaged PST file. The tool comes integrated with all the versions of Microsoft Outlook email client.

The ongoing Outlook search issues have been reported on several online forums (1, 2, 3), as well as on Microsoft's Feedback Hub, with some of them also seeing "Search performance will be impacted because of a problem with how outlook search is configured" errors.

When the Outlook email is corrupted, you may get an error that the search field is missing in Outlook 365. In such a case, repair the PST file only. Fortunately, solutions like Wonder share Repair it for Email can repair damaged PST files and recover data into new PST files. This tool can help you recover all mail data including contacts, emails, tasks and other items. Is there anything else? Evidence files can be stored in PST or other formats. I have also used this tool several times when my Outlook emails were corrupted or lost.

Corruption of PST files may be the reason why the Outlook search feature is not working in Outlook 2013. The corrupted file can be repaired, and in 2013, this can be done by clicking on the Search field to display the Search tab of the line. Now click on Search Tools and select Index Status.

Mac finds my mails in spotlight search but not in outlook app. I am also using macOs Ventura 13.0 and outlook 16.66. I started having this problem 3 weeks ago when I switched from another macbook device (Catalina) to the new one.

Researched for 2 days. After everything else, I found on the internet forums failed, I came across your comment. Last resort. Worked like a charm. Even my 14 different account settings were untouched and worked after the repair. And over 80000 emails re-indexed! I ran it over night, so took at least 7 hours in my case. Thanks, Jason

If your Outlook personal folder file is corrupted, then you can meet the Outlook search not working error. But luckily, you can also use the Inbox Repair tool to repair your Outlook personal folder file (.PST).

5. When the Office repair process is completed, launch Outlook application and see if the search problem persists. If the error "0xc0000142" appears again, then follow the same steps but this time select the Online Repair option. *

If you have encountered a similar issue then don't worry, in this article we will discuss how to fix the issue. Before we head to the fixing part let us understand some of the reasons behind the outlook search function not working.

The reasons behind the unresponsive search function in Outlook can be many, right from minor issues including using an out-of-date version of Outlook to disabled index option, inactive search service, and issues in the Outlook application. Problems like these can be fixed manually. If you are unable to fix them manually one of the major reasons can be Outlook PST files getting corrupt. Which makes those files inaccessible to the user and Outlook cannot index them. So, in order to access those files, one must try to repair them.

Note: Users can check for the status of the Windows Search service in the Services of the system by typing services.msc in the Windows run box and clicking Ok. Then scrolling to find the Windows Search service. If it is not running currently, right-click the service and click Start to start it immediately.

  • Repairing corrupt Outlook data filesAs mentioned, Outlook data file corruption could be the reason for email search not working in Outlook as corruption affects the functionality and accessibility of the Outlook features and data. So, the user can try to perform the repair of Outlook data file.
  • Manual SolutionMicrosoft provides an in-built utility Inbox Repair Tool (ScanPST.exe) and ScanOST.exe to repair the corrupt Outlook PST and OST files respectively. It includes a repair option that can repair the Outlook data file size upto 2 GB only and it is quite often that the process needs to be repeated for the complete file repair.
  • Automatic SolutionThe manual solution to repair PST file involves risk of data loss and also has the storage limitations. To tackle this, an advanced automatic third-party software is needed which ensures full security and accuracy in the process.
