What exactly is Virtualization??

Hey!

I read in a newspaper that it is possible to run multiple OS from the
same m/c without having to partition hard disk!!(i.e,virtualizing the
OSs)

I also found a link for the downloadable virtualization server-
www.vmware.com/download/server/

Can sombody explain it to me in more detail & lemme know how safely i
can use it on my machine?
