Despite two years of sustained military conflict with Hamas, Israel has not achieved its primary war objective: the complete dismantling of Hamas’ military and governing capabilities. While incurring significant losses that outweigh its achievements, Hamas has managed to survive.

Following the ceasefire, Hamas rapidly reconstituted key elements of governance in Gaza; it has reactivated local municipal councils, redeployed its operatives, reinstated its civilian police, and resumed its internal security functions. Concurrently, Hamas has advanced a strategic narrative portraying JIHAD as effective in humiliating Israel and inflicting on Israel its worst military failure since the country was ‘forcibly’ established.

Hamas retains both military and administrative control over Gaza and has achieved strategic gains beyond the battlefield. These include the disruption of Israel-Saudi Arabia normalisation process and the extraction of direct political concessions from Israel―something that the Palestinian Authority and Fatah have been unable to secure.

During Hamas’ hostage transfer ceremony in Deir al-Balah, Hamas prominently displayed the slogan, “We are the day after”, reinforcing its message that its rule remains intact and will continue. But for how long? What lies ahead in the next chapter of this deeply unsettling war between Hamas and Israel, despite the ceasefire? This talk will examine these questions.
