The foundations of human coexistence rest upon covenants—formalised agreements of rights, obligations, and trust—that sustain social order, international cooperation, accountability, and peace. The neglect and erosion of both sacred and international covenants have placed humanity in increasingly precarious circumstances, reflected in atrocities committed with impunity, the intensification of racism and Islamophobia, and the weakening of institutions charged with upholding global justice.

In this presentation, Professor Halim Rane discusses his latest book, Covenant with Allah: Keystone of Islam, and advances the argument that covenant (ʿahd and mīthāq) constitutes a central, yet under-recognised, paradigm in the Qurʾān and in the diplomatic practice of Prophet Muhammad. He examines how covenantal ethics shaped early Islamic approaches to interreligious relations, political authority, and conflict resolution, and explores their contemporary significance for international relations amid profound global crises of injustice, insecurity, and inhumanity.
