Then last year, perhaps thinking late 2019 was just the time to introduce some creeping dread into our lives, Floridian filmmaker Michael Beach Nichols made Wrinkles The Clown, a documentary about the craze.
The radium craze even spread to the New York stage, where radium plays and dances featuring performers in glow-in-the-dark costumes were shown in theaters throughout the city. However, due to the prohibitively high cost of the element, many critics suspected the glowing costumes were not made of radium, but of plain old phosphorous.
By the mid-1930s, the radium craze subsided, as the scientists and inventors who had pioneered the use of radium slowly died of cancer. Their radioactive bodies were buried in lead-lined graves. Radium, the marvel of the future, had become a menace.
Then, a few months ago, hazy IPAs exploded onto the national beer scene. No one can explain this sudden explosion, but beers with the appearance of pulpy fruit juice have swept across the country since then. The phenomenon is now billed the "haze craze." And in the past several months, these so-called New England IPAs have hit the West Coast like a wild dust storm.
We celebrate one year of garden craze this month by extending the rose bed in the far back of the yard. (What was Rich thinking when he offered to take me to Lukas after a bad week at work!?) The new additions are St. Patrick, Memorial Day, Peace, and Pope John Paul II (all hybrid teas). Hopefully they will bloom well!
