Linux Mint began in 2006 with a beta release, 1.0, code-named 'Ada',[11] based on Kubuntu and using its KDE interface. Linux Mint 2.0 'Barbara' was the first version to use Ubuntu as its codebase and its GNOME interface. It had few users until the release of Linux Mint 3.0, 'Cassandra'.[12][13]

Using the command efibootmgr -v I could see that the entry named ubuntu points to the Ubuntu 17.10 EFI disk and the one named linuxmint points to a non-existent disk. From this article I learned that "Linux Mint uses an EFI boot directory named ubuntu, which obviously conflicts with what Ubuntu itself uses". So the entry named linuxmint was a red herring, both Ubuntu and Linux Mint use the entry named ubuntu, and since this list is stored in the computer itself, Ubuntu overwrote the entry for Linux Mint, even though the Linux Mint boot drive was removed during install.

Which seems great but the installation packages don't show linux mint, and I'm going to be running linux mint 18 xfce so I'm even more confused in terms of what will work/not work. Can i use the Ubuntu install? How do I know which programs are compatible with my version of linux?

Ubuntu pulls from either the unstable/sid repo (regular releases) or from testing (currently stretch) for LTS releases. Someone created a nice reference list in this answer to a similar question - -ubuntu-version-is-equivalent-to-debian-squeeze/445496#445496

For Ulyssa you can use the ubuntu focal repos. Anyway in case of issue, i would reccomend to use the docker script, I personally used it and it worked with no issue. save as .sh file where ever you wnat and then execute it:

It would not be in the ubuntu repository as that is a mint only package, it may be possible to get it through a ppa, but that may not be good for your system, I would suggest for you to use the ubuntu software center, app grid may be available, or the software botique, otherwise you can use synaptic

I would also love to have mint software manager, it appears to include quite some software that is not availabe in the ubuntu software center. Since I won't be able to install secondary dependencies (UM software boutique "software" thoughts) - has anybody figured out a different way?

I'm using Sublime from mintinstall Software Manager 8.0.9, and it's asking for a license, it's never done this before to the best of my knowledge. It's been way less than 3 years since I started using it. I believe I may have unauthorized access. Please help!

Ubuntu-MATE is not Linux-Mint, so since you used the mint-installer to get packages from Linux-mint on your system, your post should actually be up on the messageboard of Linux-Mint instead of here. Or even better, on the messageboard of Sublime HQ Pty Ltd, Woollahra, Sydney :

I am a user of the Time Tracking application on Linux Mint and Ubuntu. Today, I worked 2 hours of time and when I want to disconnect, I notice that the tracker has only counted 1 hour of time. It puts me lost connection. After restarting my computer, I have this capture (1.png) I followed all the steps of the help center to solve this type of incident but it did not work. I just tried to connect to my other pc which is ubuntu and I have the same problem (2.png [On the A, I did 13 hrs of work, on the B, I did 20 hrs.]). I can't connect. The application opens but I can't load the times I made this week.

I ran into the exact same problem : I installed QGIS on my Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon which is based on Ubuntu focal via the debian package manager using this installation recommendations: -ubuntu ... and ended up with QGIS 3.26.

I've re-added ubuntu 14.04 repo.
We don't want to support two LTS versions in general. For Ubuntu we now have 14.04 LTS and 16.04 LTS plus 16.10 and 17.04 -- The question is, how many 14.04 users are still out there, and cannot upgrade. Hard to tell, is it?

Canonical does have an impact though; for the last several Ubuntu releases, Ask Ubuntu has been an official source of support for Ubuntu and is explicitly recommended as a place to get help by the slideshow displayed during installation. Searching help.ubuntu.com even includes search results from Ask Ubuntu.
