In 1960, Alex Jordan opened his dream house built atop a chimney of rock to the public. Over the years, Alex expanded his vision beyond the House and collected and built on a massive scale. What began as a lofty retreat with an awe-inspiring view has become a spectacular attraction known as The House on the Rock.
The campground road and parking spurs are composed of packed dirt and rock. The double-loop area comes with accessible vault toilets and drinking water from hand pumps. Picnic tables, campfire rings and grills are at each site.
The first roadside waterfall of the day was Black Creek Falls. When Black Creek is more than a trickle, the water slides down the rocks in the middle of the photo above and appears to be a fairly impressive cascade. (Can you picture it? I warned you it would take some imagination!)
Schoolhouse Rock Live! is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
From the parking area at the end of House Rock Road, follow the posts demarcating the Ralph H. Goodno Trail. Turn south to stay along the edge of the meadow and enter the woods. Follow a single path dirt trail, cross House Rock Run, and connect with the Conestoga Trail at the House Rock Scenic Overlook. To reach the overlook, there is a moderate rock scramble. Return the same way you came to get back to the parking area.
Clark Nature Preserve is part of the ancestral lands of the Shenks Ferry and Susquehannock peoples as well as those who came before them. Deep eastern deciduous forests and pawpaw groves cover the steep sides of the river valley between schist bedrock outcrops. Open meadows in various stages of succession and patches of savannah have been restored on the plateau. As you hike, discover the diversity of ecology and landscape that make this preserve a special place.
I'm the guy behind DownTheTrail.com. I love the outdoors, and the Grand Canyon is my favorite destination. Be sure to subscribe to my newsletter (at the bottom of the page), or else I'll slip a rock into your backpack when you're not looking.
Houserock was the first real test. There are many flips in this and the current pushes left into the big hole really strong. I watched runs on YouTube over-and-over and I had a plan and it worked. This was the very-first seriously difficult rapid I ever rowed and it worked.
This geologic map is a cooperative effort of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, and the U.S. Forest Service to provide a geologic database for resource management officials and visitor information services. This map was produced in response to information needs related to a proposed withdrawal of three segregated land areas near Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, from new hard rock mining activity. House Rock Valley was designated as the east parcel of the segregated lands near the Grand Canyon. This map was needed to provide connectivity for the geologic framework of the Grand Canyon segregated land areas.
Landmark features within the map area include the Vermilion Cliffs, Paria Plateau, Marble Canyon, and House Rock Valley. Surface drainage in House Rock Valley is to the east toward the Colorado River in Marble Canyon. Large tributaries of Marble Canyon from north to south include Badger Canyon, Soap Creek, Rider Canyon, North Canyon, Bedrock Canyon, and South Canyon. Elevations range from about 2,875 ft (876 m) at the Colorado River in the southeast corner of the map to approximately 7,355 ft (2,224 m) on the east rim of Paria Plateau along the north-central edge of the map area.
Next up was the entrée. I decided to give one of their bowls a try. I know, I know, I have made it a habit for burgers after a hike but I figured I would show something for the rest of the folks out there. The bowl was big as well. Each bowls come with dressed house greens, super slaw and roasted pumpkin seeds. You can then choose a style of bowl for the rest. I got the southwestern bowl which also had brown rice, black beans, avocado, roasted green chilies, and pumpkin pesto aioli. Finally, its time to pick a protein and I chose house smoked brisket.

It truly is a very cool and amazing rock. You can easily drive by it, but the interior is indeed, comfortable enough for camping if not quite for living. The folklore is that a family that lost their home during a horrible fire in winter moved in. (They have since moved out). It is of course a rock moved to the current position it occupies by a glacier. In fact there are huge rocks abounding in the surrounding area! I leave it for a future visit from my geologist daughter to tell me just what kind of rock it is.
Jordan built the house as a weekend retreat and never intended it to be a tourist attraction. However, people kept coming to see the architectural wonder they had heard about. Jordan eventually started asking for 50-cent donations. That was only the beginning. The 14-room house is the original structure of what is now a complex of many buildings, exhibits, and garden displays.
