Enterthe "cava-poo-chon." The breed is the newest and latest in the decades-old search for the dog-face fountain of youth and perfect pet accessory. But the American Kennel Club does not recognize the new trend as an official breed, and one expert calls some specially bred small dogs expensive "gimmicks."

"There's always been a market for these forever-ish young dogs," said veteran trainer Steve Haynes of Fidelio Dog Works in Austin who is working with 50 first-generation cava-poo-chons. "Until recently, specialized dogs like miniature Yorkies and miniature Maltese were the go-to dogs."

The cava-poo-chon is a cavalier King Charles spaniel and bichon frise mix bred with a miniature poodle. With the help of a geneticist and reproductive veterinarian, the tribrid or "triple cross" was created by Linda and Steve Rogers of Timshell Farm in Pine, Ariz.

"Never have we had a more loving, sweet dog. She wants to say hello to everyone," said Wolf, who moved into a new home with her husband two months before getting Callie. "We've met tons of people while walking her. We feel much more connected with this neighborhood than the previous one, all because of her. She makes us more approachable, and we feel a lot safer."

The popularity of the baby look for dogs started more than a half-century ago with mail-order teacup pups advertised in the backs of magazines. Yorkies, Maltese and Pomeranians were popular for a while, and recently there have been hybrid hounds "with cutesy names that end in '-oodle,' '-uddle' or '-poo' that come with thousand-dollar price tags," said author and certified animal behavior consultant Darlene Arden of Massachusetts.

"There is no such thing as a teacup anything," Arden said. "It is a market term used by backyard breeders and commercial breeders so they can breed the smallest dogs that shouldn't be bred and sell them for a whole lot of money. These dogs usually end up having health problems and most veterinarians don't want to touch them because the organs are so small."

"AKC does not recognize cross-bred or mixed breed dogs as official breeds," spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said. "These dogs are the product of two purebred parents of different breeds, resulting in a litter of mixed breed puppies, not a new breed, according to our requirements."

"Every time I log in, she is running around having a blast," Bradshaw said. She sometimes feels like Bridgette has forgotten about her until pickup time, when Bridgette spots Bradshaw and "runs full-speed ahead, her tail going a million miles a minute, right into my arms."

Although a numerically small entry, the overall level of quality of conformation was good. Most dogs were correctly proportioned with only a handful of overly long ones. Short ribbing and keels with correspondingly long loins were sadly much in evidence, as were flat feet. Some appeared out of balance, with hindquarters higher than their forequarters, although they had reasonable angulation. Several dogs would benefit from more exercise to improve muscle tone and a few also needed to carry more body condition. A few were not in their best coat either. I also found several slightly nervous dogs, although I was able to handle all of them on the table. All mouths were correct but some had dirty teeth, unfortunately. Movement was generally good, however, it is very difficult to assess hind action moving away due to profuse feathering on the back legs in this variety. My co-judge, Mandy Dance and I were in complete accord when deciding the final awards.

Shaded cream with pleasing outline, moving and showing with confidence. Well proportioned head with dark, correctly shaped eye. Well angulated in fore and hindquarters, although he is a little higher behind at the moment in stance and profile movement. Parallel action up and back. Good bone and substance throughout.

Compact cream with high quality conformation. Attractive head with dark eye, carried proudly on good length of neck. Correctly placed shoulders and good length of upper arm. Well boned with good substance and spring of rib. Well angulated hindquarters. Stands true in front and behind and moves with parallel action out and back, holding his outline in profile. Presented in beautiful condition. Best Puppy in Breed.

Longer bodied red of different type. Pleasing masculine head and expression. Not quite the quality of forequarter construction of the 1st, being slightly shorter in upper arm and turning front feet out slightly. Good overall body shape and hind angulation. Needs a little bit more confidence to make the best of himself. Moved freely in profile, but slightly close in front coming towards me.

Impressive rich red with immediate impact viewed on the move where he covers the ground with an effortless, long stride and parallel action up and back. He is correctly proportioned with good ground clearance. Elegant overall outline with attractive head and expression. Good reach of neck flowing into correctly placed shoulders and has pleasing length of upper arm and forechest. Well angulated hindquarters complete the picture. Really comes into his own on the move and put on a good performance in the 3 classes he was entered in to take the dog CC. Just lacked maturity against his kennel mate in the challenge for Best of Breed.

Compact, correctly proportioned shaded read of pleasing type. Masculine head carried proudly on the move. Has good angulation in fore and hindquarters and is well balanced. Good bone and substance throughout and moves freely in profile with parallel action up and back and a good length of stride.

Longer-bodied red with good head, eye, reach of neck and topline. Has a good overall outline, with firm topline, held on the move viewed in profile. Good overall quality of conformation. Well presented and in good coat and condition. I just preferred the more compact outline of 1st, however it was a close decision.

I see this quality red has the same sire as my CC winner and is very similar in type, overall outline and conformation. Attractive head with correctly shaped dark eye. Good reach of neck flows smoothly into well laid shoulders. Firm topline and well angulated hindquarters complete the picture. Strode out freely with good length of stride and moved correctly up and back. Not quite in as good coat as the winner. Reserve CC.

Credelio tablets are made with a beef flavoring containing pork liver and soy but no actual beef.7 Tablets also contain barley, wheat and lactose.7,8 Consult your veterinarian before using in dogs with food allergies to pork, soy, barley, wheat or lactose.

Credelio can be used as part of a treatment strategy for the control of FAD. In the U.S. field study, dogs in the Credelio treatment group with signs of FAD showed an improvement in clinical signs associated with FAD as a direct result of eliminating fleas.

Credelio kills adult fleas quickly and effectively when used monthly according to the label directions. Remember that all animals in the household should be treated with an approved flea product to minimize the likelihood of flea re-infestation.

Credelio is a systemic medication, meaning that ticks have to bite a dog to be exposed to Credelio and for Credelio to start to work. It could be that the ticks you are seeing are those that have just recently crawled onto the dog and have not yet started to feed (and, therefore, have not yet been exposed to Credelio).

If a dose is missed, administer Credelio with food and resume a monthly dosing schedule to minimize the opportunity for tick and flea re-infestations. Consult your veterinarian about any concerns you may have about ticks and fleas due to the late/missed dose.

Credelio has a rapid onset of action and starts to kill fleas in just four hours. In a well-controlled U.S. laboratory study, Credelio demonstrated 100% effectiveness against adult fleas within 12 hours after administration, up to day 35.

Credelio acts to kill adult fleas and, in a speed-of-kill study, Credelio killed 100% of fleas on dogs within 12 hours of administration, up to day 35. Adult female fleas begin to lay eggs within 20-24 hours of taking her first blood meal.13 Since Credelio works fast,* killing 100% of fleas within 12 hours for the entire month, Credelio kills fleas before they can lay eggs.

*Credelio starts killing fleas in four hours and kills 99% within eight hours for 35 days. Credelio is greater than 97% effective against labeled tick species 48 hours after administration or infestation for 30 days. In a controlled European study, Credelio starts killing ticks (?????? ???????) in four hours.

Puppies should be at least 8 weeks old and weigh 4.4 pounds or more. Puppies should be weighed each month and dosed accordingly at the time of administration with a minimum dosage of 9 mg/lb or 20 mg/kg.

Credelio must be administered with food or given within 30 minutes after feeding. While we did not conduct any studies where a crushed Credelio tablet was added to food or water and fed to a dog, Credelio is a chewable tablet that can be chewed or swallowed whole.

Credelio kills adult fleas and is indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations and treatment and control of tick infestations (lone star tick, American dog tick, black-legged tick and brown dog tick) for one month in dogs and puppies 8 weeks and older and 4.4 pounds or greater.
