Hi
I was wondering what your thoughts are on using the OCLC PURL service
at http://purl.org do you think this service is being maintained
currently, and what are the prospects for maintaining it in the
future? I'm considering use of a PURL type solution at University of
Liverpool for the Library pages I maintain and was wondering hwo far
this is a viable option, or if you would suggest a locally hosted PURL
server instead. Many thanks.

Hi Paul,

I am currently using the OCLC PURL service for several projects I am working on.
I don't know how or if it is being maintained at the moment, but I am hoping that if there were plans to retire it there would be an option to retrieve a list of PURLs and use that somewhere else. I didn't see an option to download batches of PURLs [1]; we have been submitting them that way so have the files should we need to recreate some. Maybe that would be an option for you?

Cheers,
Melanie

We use purl.oclc.org
However we own a domain name, purl.obolibrary.org, that is cname for purl.org
In the case that purl.org lands up having trouble, we would have a way
to set up an alternative server.
