The government expects Indonesia’s exports to grow by 5 percent next
year, bouncing back from this year’s estimated 15 percent drop, as a
global economic recovery will push demand up for goods. “Our exports
will increase by 5 percent next year. We’re optimistic about that,”
Trade Minister Mari Elka Pengestu said at the House of Representatives
Monday, after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono delivered the
government’s proposed 2010 state budget bill to legislators. “Given
this year’s contraction, it will be good enough [for our exports to
grow] positively next year.” Indonesia’s exports — as well as exports
in other developing countries — have been hit hard by the global
economic downturn, which eventually curbed demand. However, many
governments and analysts have predicted the global economy would start
