Thissong is a heartfelt plea to a divine entity, expressing feelings of despair and longing. The lyrics depict a state of emotional turmoil, where the singer is unable to understand why their prayers are going unanswered.

This is an iconic song from Indian cinema, written by Gulzar saab for Ijazat, a film he directed himself. This unusual song with none of the rhythm and rhyme of a typical Bollywood number won two National Awards for best lyrics and best female playback singer and remains in the minds of Bollywood music lovers as a rare Pablo Nerudaesque metaphoric enigma. The song has an entire page on Wikipedia full of trivia dedicated to it. Read it here, _Kuchh_Saamaan
Love Bollywood and passionate about translating poetry. Hence. bollywoodtarjuma, i.e. Bollywood Translations. On my blog you will find my take on my favorite Bollywood lyrics in English. More often than not, it will not be a literal translation and that's how I like it. Translating metaphor into metaphor has been my passion all along and now I wish to share it with the world. So please enjoy and let me know your feedback. If there are any songs/poetry/dialogue you want me to translate, I would love to give it a try. Just leave a comment with your request.PS: All original songs belong to the copyright owners. I have no intention of infringement, just a desire to partake in the joy those words bring to my world.
Pal pal dil ke paas, tum rehti ho, translates to English as; you remain close to my heart every second. I remember listening to this for the first time in 1973, and thinking how clever and exquisitely beautiful these kalyanji-anandji lyrics are. The repetition of pal (second) is simply a poetic of way of expressing every second. In this case, it means that she remains close (paas) to his heart (dil) every second. This of course means that he is in love and thinking of her every second, during which time, he has a new appreciation for life with every second reminding him sweet... thirst... life... Consequently, each second gives him a sweet thirst for life.
Love is that special time, when there is that awakening and connection that occurs which keeps you in wonder. It makes you wonder whether it is real and actually happening, and consequently it can appear surreal to some people. For the most part, the lyrics are simple to understand as he is simply describing the typical symptoms of a man who is in love. In some places the translation comes out in reverse, hence the third line corrects it.
The most difficult part to translate was, mujhe baandh lo, bandhan mein, which comes out as tie me in bondage, which many people write. However, in the UK, that means something completely different :-) However a more polished approximation would be, take my hand in marriage.
thank you so much :). the request for the song's translation on your blog "woh humsafar tha" was my first comment ever on any blog post. i was in doubt about whether you would respond to random requests(and that too so quickly!!), let alone write an entire blog with a bonus entry ,which is again so wonderful. thank you very much!! you are awesome:)
It is Atif again.. :)
I must say meenakshi that you have started to impress me. Because most of the Indians got 'Zindagi khaak na thi' wordings wrong. Even some Pakistanis too. But you got it perrrrfectly.

Karachi, Pakistan.
Thanks Guys. To be honest- I just didn't fully know about 5 words of the song- the rest I knew from the language spoken around me while growing up. I have of course also read many books and comics in Hindi which i think makes the biggest difference in Vocabulary.
Hi Meenakshi. I'm here on your blog for the first time. I watched Zindagi gulzar Hai recently on Zee Zindagi and obviously loved it. I was searching for the translation of few words from the female version. Thanks for sharing it.
PS: Do you have any link to the complete song? I mean the one I found online was only three stanzas.
Dear Ms. Garodia,
I appreciate your efforts to translate the 'zindagi khaak na thi ghazal'.
I would like to point out that "Tujh say kya kehtay teray pass jo aatay guzri" actually means how could I have told you what happened to me/what occurred as I was coming to see you.
Thank you, for taking the time to help the rest of us out though.
Regards,
Noor
Noor- can you share where you got the meaning from? I have been thinking about it. For it to mean what you say it may - don't you think the lyrics would have been
"Tujh say kya kehtay teray pass KYA aatay guzri". You are saying the the "Jo" is associated with "guzri". I'm not yet convinced but open to being!
Hi meenakshi ji thnx so much for explaining the lyrics so well. Ever since I watched zindagi gulzar hai on zindagi I had been searching for the meaning of this song since I did not really understood the words. Thnx so much for explaining n hats off to u for translating d Urdu despite of not being a Muslim.
Also I would say this to d Pakistani readers dat ur shows r awesome. We really love dem and we respect all of you and ur talent from d bottom of our hearts. Regards from india.
Hi Meenakshiji,
Many thanks for the lyrics and the translations which were great and would give anyone a good idea of the meaning of the songs.
You say that you are a Hindi speaking person rather than Urdu but in general, Hindi and Urdu share the same grammatical structure as well as most of the vocabulary, about 70%. This fact I have discovered from trying to learn the languages properly through textbooks I have purchased here in the UK.
I really enjoy watching Zindagi Gulzar Hai although I missed the majority of it and watched it from episode 19. Some of the Pakistani dramas are great and a good way to learn Hindi / Urdu.
I still remember watching "Tanhaiyan" and "Dhoop Kinarey".
Arun- I think the similarity of Urdu/ hindi is what makes it easy for me to translate. You can actually find all the episodes of all these shows online- Zindagi was most interesting in the begining. Thanks for reading!

Meenakshi where did you get the full ghazal " Zindadi khaak na thi" because I did not find all the lines that you had mentioned in the song online. These lines were missing
Zindagi jis kay muqadar main ho khushiyan teri
Ussko aata hai nibhana so nibhatay guzri
Zindagi naam udher hai kisi sarshaari ka
Aur udher door say aik aas lagatay guzri
From where did you get them? I want to listen. Can you please share the link?
HI Akanksha,
I went through the show- there were odd paragraphs put in here and there- I compiled them into one set of lyrics. Not sure if all the lyrics are together in one place.
Thanks for reading- will be updating with an awesome new show soon!
I want to listen to the complete song. Nowhere I am able to find all the lines. And I so badly want to listen it in one piece.
Can someone please share the link for the complete song. I would be really really grateful.
Thank you so much for your effort with the lyrics! However, the link for the female version of the song does not work. I was not able to find the complete female version of the song (corresponding to your lyrics) anywhere on You tube. Could you please direct me, if possible? I would be eternally grateful!
