Hi, I have downloaded a trial of Veeam Office 365 backup after hearing how good it was in several places as we currently use another product but it's not the best in terms of features. Initial setup was simple enough but when it came to running the backup job, the performance was dreadfully slow. Averaging between 500-800kbps, it will take months to backup at this rate! Bandwidth is not an issue, we have a leased line and easily get 200meg down.
Surely something must be wrong? I have read about auxiliary accounts but that option is greyed out for me...? I have the latest version, downloaded only last week. A bit disappointing since the rest of it seems to be pretty sweet.
Seeing that rate it will definitely be throttling on the MS side playing a part. You need to be able to set up the Aux accounts to use for backups which help improve on speed. You may need to work with the person that is the O365 Admin to do this or have the account you are working with changed to Admin in the system as it sounds like it might not be.

I'm experiencing similar problems with M365 backups, where the speed is around 14-16MB/s when only backing up mailboxes. The bottleneck seems to be the source according to the job analysis. Is it normal to have this throughput when backing up mailboxes from M365? Can disabling EWS and Powershell throttling improve the speed in this situation? What speeds are others achieving in this regard?
However, if I then delete the User account, it seems like it takes the Shared mailbox with it and removes that too. What is the best way to have the shared mailbox stay around forever, but free up the license from the User to assign to someone else and eventually get rid of the user account completely if I can.
After you convert the account to a shared mailbox, you can remove the license from the user account. It just needs the user account to exist as an anchor. You do NOT need to license that account though and the Shared Mailbox will still function the same.
Is there a way to designate O365 accounts as Disable other than just removing the licenses? Can we have them not show up in the Active Users or do they have to be Active Users forever as long as we want the shared mailbox to hang around?
To me it entirely depends if we need their previous mail versus just needing future email. If historical email is needed I take the convert to shared mailbox route. If only future email is needed, delete the account & assign the alias to whoever needs that email going forward.
If you had Microsoft 365 backup solution before deleting the user, restoring the deleted folders or emails would never be a problem. I recommend that you consider this third-party data protection software.

Deleting a user is not an available option for every business domain, especially some regulated business domains. For reasons of transparency, accountability and revision safety, a user id may need to persist for decades after leaving company. In such cases, the user id does not get deleted but deactivated instead. You are correct you can use the in-built legal hold and data retention settings in Office 365 to cover most of your recovery needs, however this might not tick all the boxes for your company's backup policies as it is still contained within the same system. There are some good options for 3rd party backups like SkyKick, Backupify & Avepoint, however they mostly will backup to Microsoft Azure and have unlimited retention with multiple backups a day, one item to note is that the data will still be stored with Microsoft (as it is in Azure) if that is a problem or not.

I don't know how closely Outlook compares to determine a duplicate, but as I read these three options, the second one would have the least data loss as it will allow duplicate emails to be retained as unique messages, and it will also result in the largest possible .pst size.
Just personal understanding as I haven't found any official documentation, the three options matter only when you choose an existing PST file which already have data in it. If you name a new PST file, no need to bother with the options. Of course, to avoid unexpected data loss, it's recommended to select the second option.
