On Friar Podcast: Is This a Turning Point? Good Signs, Injury News in Key Stretch

The Padres came home and wet on a tear. Jurickson Profar is playing like an All-Star starter. Manny is looking Manny-esque. Kyle Higashioka is hitting bombs left and right. Mike Shildt’s club continues to show some scrap and it’s winning them games. So will this key stretch turn out to be a turning point? The guys discuss that, and what we make of injury updates on Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts and others.

Aztecs star Jaedon LeDee not selected in NBA Draft

58 players were taken in the 2024 NBA Draft. An Aztecs All-American was not one of them.

Jaedon LeDee, the reigning Karl Malone Award winner as the nation’s best power forward, went undrafted. Unfortunately, this was not a major surprise. NBA teams have concerns about LeDee’s age (24 years old puts him on the older side of eligible draftees) and size because he fits right in the middle between power forward and wing. However, what teams do love about LeDee is his strength and effort.

At 6’9″ and 240 pounds he is a powerful human being. Coming from a defense-first program like San Diego State he is a willing defender who can wear down opposing players. In the pre-draft process he had workouts with multiple teams, including the Warriors, Suns, Cavaliers, and Nets, Jaedon will have offers to sign as a free agent. That course might end up working in his favor because instead of having to go to the team that takes him, LeDee can look for the situation most beneficial for his game and choose to sign there.

Padres sweep Nationals behind 2 home runs from Kyle Higashioka.

It was a series to remember for the San Diego Padres.

Monday, Jurickson Profar hit a 2-out 2-run single to rally the Padres from 4 runs down in the 10th inning to win 7-6.

Tuesday, a bench clearing skirmish, followed by clutch home runs from Manny Machado and Profar gave the Padres a 9-7 win in one of the most spirited games of the season.

Alex Morgan left off the 18-player US soccer roster headed to the Olympics

Veteran forward Alex Morgan won’t be going to the Paris Olympics after surprisingly being left off the roster by U.S. national team coach Emma Hayes.

Morgan, a three-time Olympian and two-time Women’s World Cup winner, was the most notable absence on the 18-player list announced Wednesday by Hayes.

The roster, the youngest for the U.S. since 2008, signals a shift in the team as it looks toward the 2027 Women’s World Cup under Hayes.

Profar and Machado hit statement blasts to beat Nats 9-7 after early dustup

Jurickson Profar hit a grand slam five innings after being in the middle of a benches-clearing dustup, and Manny Machado also hit a dramatic home run as the San Diego Padres beat the Washington Nationals 9-7 on Tuesday night in another wild game between the teams.

Profar’s fourth career grand slam and second this season came with one out in the sixth off Derek Law and the Petco Park crowd went wild. Profar craned to watch the ball sail just inside the foul pole and into the home run porch in right field. He tossed his bat aside, patted his chest and gestured to the Padres’ dugout as he began his trot.

Profar, having a career year at 31 and on a $1 million contract, is leading the balloting for NL outfielders for the All-Star Game. It was his 11th homer this season.

Jurickson Profar's 2-run, 2-out single in the 10th inning gives the Padres a 7-6 win over the Nats

Jurickson Profar’s two-run, bases-loaded single with two outs in the 10th inning lifted the San Diego Padres to a wild 7-6 victory over the Washington Nationals on Monday night.

Profar’s hit into the right-center gap bounced over the fence. Profar rounded first base, swerved toward the infield celebration, pulled off his helmet and raised his arms in the air.

The Nationals intentionally walked major league hits leader Luis Arraez to get to Profar, and then Hunter Harvey (2-3) threw a knockdown pitch. Profar’s winning hit came five batters after rookie Jackson Merrill hit a two-run single to center.
