2 Navy Sailors among 3 dead in crash on I-5 near Camp Pendleton

Three motorcyclists, including two U.S. Navy Sailors, were killed in a crash on southbound I-5 near Camp Pendleton early Thursday that was causing traffic delays hours later.

The crash was reported around 3 a.m. just south of Las Pulgas Road. A jeep swerved and hit the guardrail and became disabled in the southbound lanes. Then a Mercedes van hit the Jeep and overturned, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Hunter Gerber. This caused a chain reaction crash where then four motorcyclists crashed into the van.

Three of the four motorcyclists died at the scene, Gerber said. A spokesperson for the U.S. Navy confirmed the two of the riders were Sailors.

‘Rising star' Oakland firefighter drowns near Pacific Beach in San Diego

San Diego lifeguards have recovered the body of a young Oakland firefighter, who drowned in Pacific Beach overnight Thursday, according to authorities.

Caeden Laffan, 25, was found dead after a two-hour search for a missing swimmer near Grand Avenue that began around 2:15 a.m. He was in San Diego for the Firefighting Summer Olympics, according to Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington.

“Caeden was a rising star. A very sharp individual. We had big plans for him, for his future. So it’s extremely tragic,” Covington said. “He was very anxious to learn about every aspect of the fire department. He came up in the fire family. He was a third-generation firefighter so he understood what the fire service was all about.”
