Hi,
Pip - thanks heaps for taking on the lead Landscape (manager) role. Some notes from me here to get you going. Hope they're ok. I'll give you a call too.
For others cc'd in on this - thought it best you know what's happening in the Landscape area of the Better Block. Plus if you can help Pip with any of the things below, please let him and I know. Landscape is a crucial part of the whole project which is why I'm keen to get things organised well.
Key goal
Hope it's ok but I'd like to get the Landscape team to focus on the key job at this stage - which is getting the trees and plants from the Nursuries and on the ground in the right places (on the road and the footpath.) There's a lot of work just in that (per below.)
Plus if we can do that well it will have a big impact on greening the streetscape - which is what we want long term - a landscape of trees and plants actually in the dirt (cut out of the bitumen and concrete.) The idea of the day is that we do a temporary demonstration of that. And that we show people it's possible to make their own daggy bitumen suburban street greener and better.
If we still have capacity and time once we've worked all the aspects of this out, we could look at doing other initiatives. If possible I think we should try, if we can, to do a secondary project (outlined further below) with the folks wanting to really dig things up and possibly grow food. At this stage we'd like to hold off on the planters.
Key tasks (for the Lead Manager)
Here are the tasks as I see them at this stage:
Stock
1. identify exactly what trees and plants we have from Andreasens Nursery and when they're coming
2. identify exactly what trees and plants we can get from Randwick Council Nursery and when they could be here
3. identify exactly what trees and plants we can get from 1 (or 2?) other nurseries and when they could be here
4. compile an inventory of the trees and plants we have (especially by size)
Delivery and installation
5. organise the transport in of those trees and plants from each Nursery
6. develop a schedule of when the trees and plants are coming in and provide to Operations (for them to chase up for you)
7. work with / ask Operations to get the people who are Muscles to be there and help when plants arrive (Operations to organise them)
8. put together and brief a mini team from the Landscape crew to oversee Muscles / moving plants on the day (i.e. this Landscape team need to know where things go)
9. ensure the plants from the different nurseries don't get mixed up (i.e. have a plan)
Design - work with the Landscape Architect
10. work with the Traffic team to identify where the 'bulb outs' (curb extensions) will go - Traffic team should lead this decision
11. work out which are the key trees and plants to make the bulb outs work (in terms of providing barriers / safety)
12. nut out where the other trees and plants will go
13. organise a landscape drawing made of the overall plan - with an outline of the plants we know we have in it (particularly the big plants)
14. provide the landscape plan to key people viz. Operations and Traffic (Operations to then add items and give to other teams)
Landscape plan
We have a couple of Landscape Architects who should be able to draw up the plan. Best to also work with David McCrae (Operations) on this. David can then add in other key aspects e.g. furniture, music stages, etc. (David is also an architect.)
Water: rain garden, storm water tanks, Sydney Water, and a 'Water Manager'
One thing to be aware of is that we have, like many other places, an issue with water run off - the water here washing the oil, tyre rubber and muck from the road into the ocean just down from here. Barbara Schaffer pointed out that we could and should put in rain gardens ultimately. Ideally when we develop the landscape plan it should include where those rain gardens would go. In fact it'd be great to mock those up for the event with the plants we're getting and maybe put a sign up to let people know that's what we're thinking. The signage team (Lucinda Dryden) could help make that sign and the Landscape Architect could write it.
The Landscape Architects should play a key role in developing the rain gardens (for the event and later.)
Great that you've also raised stormwater catchment tanks. Even info there on the day and a rep from a company or Sydney Water would be a good simple start.
In fact I have a good contact at Sydney Water - the Senior Community Manager Sally Armstrong. They are definitely interested in our project and may able to help with the rain garden and tanks. They also have money and resources.
It'd be great if someone from the Landscape team took Water on as their own mini project and chased these ideas up. They could be the Water Manager!? Anyone up for it?
Help / delegation / assistant / team roles
As you can see there's a lot of fiddly stuff in this. The best way forward I think is for team members to take on one little bit each, with Pip playing Leader and making sure it comes together.
Pip - I might also be able to also provide with an assistant to help you. I've cc'd Emma McGirr, a UNSW Planning Masters student, as I think she might be interested and would be good. Her number is also
0404 934 800. (Emma lives up the road and should be there this Sunday.)
If anyone can help Pip in any of the areas raised please let him know.
I've outlined key roles in the landscape team below. You could tweak or add others. Be great this Sunday if people could stick their hand up for one of the roles and then take it on and make their bit happen. You're welcome bring like-minded friends to help.
Delivery and installation of trees and plants
One of the challenges we've got is that I don't think we can leave plants out overnight as they may get pinched. This means we have to put all the plants in on the morning of 27/10.
This means we need to:
- have a clear idea of where things are going beforehand
- have many helpers (Muscles) there on the morning
- Landscape team ready to direct where things are going on the morning
- helpers (Muscles) there for the bump out from 3.30pm (Operations should also help make sure we have people)
We know already the truck from Andreasens is coming early Sunday morning 27/10. We also need to have a clear idea of what's coming when from other Nurseries, and we need to have that organised.
Pip - if you need help organising all this please let me know. It's going to be important to nail down the detail. The Operations team might be able to take on a chunk of it. Jann's number is
0410 480 410.
Jann - can you please help Pip?
(Pip - can you let Pip and I know your number.)
Secondary project - other side of Beach street roundabout
There are some folk who are champing at the bit to dig things up and particularly plant food. Great! (It includes Permaculture East people, Russ, and Shelby's contacts.) Think there could be a little off-shoot / sub-group of these guys - the Veg (and fruit trees) team!
By the way, Costa is also interested in getting involved. It'd be great if someone from the Veg team can chase him up to come on the day, and if possibly get him involved beforehand. (I have his number and email.)
The Veg team could possibly do something on the grassy bit just on the other side of the Beach Street roundabout. (So crossing over East of the roundabout.) Perhaps they can come up with a plan of what they want to do, plus how it'll work long term (i.e. after the event.) Then I can go with a Veg representative / team leader to speak with the owner down there.
If people also want to plant natives in that location that could also be good. Might be good to also ask our Landscape Architects (Ari, Nicole or Barbara) which plants they think should go there.
Think we need to make sure though we have the major project above covered though e.g. in terms of people to help make it happen.
Wall garden!
This is not out of the question, though you can see the priority and the work involved above. One thought is that you do a workshop on wall gardens on the day!? If you still have time and energy and helpers, and you got permission, you could start the wall garden on the day of the event to show building it in action.
The 3 possibilities are the wall on:
- the other side of the Beach Street roundabout
- the side of the Upholstery shop on Arden Street
- the wall on the side of the Creativity Unlimited studio - the little alley (Yes, Lisa and I are up for it!)
But again, reckon we should make sure we've sorted the big stuff above first.
Summary of roles raised within the Landscape team
Be great if people could take on one of these roles and work with Pip (who is Landscape Leader):
- Landscape Co-ordinator (general assistant to Pip) - Emma
- Stock Co-ordinator (help Pip do the stock bit above and look after the plants to make sure they're not damaged)
- Transport Co-ordinator (help Pip do the transport bit above and move things around on the day)
- Location Co-ordinator (help Pip mark the site out the day before the event and get the plants installed)
- Landscape Architect (to design the overall site and draft the plan)
- Veg Team Leader
- Wall Garden Leader
- Water Manager
Jann may suggest other roles. Jann is our event management expert will be here this Sunday too.
Phew - hope you all coped with my mammoth briefing email. This daggy road is going to look brilliant if we can get the plants in here and show others what's possible where they live.
Really appreciate your help. Hope to see you Sunday, 3pm at Creativity Unlimited studio again.
Regards,
Phil
