Hi All,
Hope you're all well and enjoying the summer - please see below for
the long awaited news on our project plannign session. So sorry for
the delay! Those who werer there - please let me know if you think I
have misrepresented anything decided by the group.

South-East Permaculture Diploma Guild – project planning day in March
2011 at Kent Enterprise House in Herne Bay.

....diagram missing... this outines vision, mission, values and
strategy model - where do we wnat to go, why do we wnat to get there,
how are we going to get there and what are going to do in order to get
there.

We used this model to help organise our thoughts and to explore how we
are going to work as a group and what we hope to achieve.

Vision: to provide a gateway to Permaculture

Values: We believe in sharing, thriving, being inclusive, connecting,
taking personal responsibility, sharing knowledge, empowerment, making
our work visible, resourcefulness, global equality, in good health and
taking action for future generations. These values will be carried
through diploma project work and be expressed in our communications.

Mission: For the guild to provide peer support for the guild members
in order to coordinate our project work, expand projects and share and
build the skills and learning developed through project work.
Disseminate resources from diploma projects in order to activate the
wider community so that the process of doing the diploma has a wider
value for each member.

Objectives:
The mission will be achieved by working in teams and individually on
our diploma projects to:
1. develop information sharing through the use of the web, publishing
articles and other means
2. build skills through organising/leading hands-on practical sessions
3. build community resources to enable sustainable livelihoods for
mutual use

We thought that a combination of activity sessions and whole group
meetings would provide the structure and support to make this a
success. Activity sessions can be led by anyone with an area of
knowledge that they are developing as a diploma project that they want
to share or to develop for their own self by preparing to share with
others.

Activity Programme so far (dates to be set)…

1. Website building and information entering
Leaders: Josef, David, Bert
Members: Janice, Jeremy…anyone to join up

2. Plant knowledge building
Leader: Janice
Members:

3. Soil and Raised beds
Leaders Jeremy and Becky
Members:

Activity sessions for interest teams can then report back to the whole
group that could meet a suggested 4 times per year

Suggested whole meeting dates:
Saturday June 18th
OR
Sunday June 26th
Host to be decided!

Hope you all find this a good model that will help us to work together
productively!

I'll try to load the whoel document up on the facebook page.
Jo Barker woudl loe to give anyone any advice needed whether you want
her to be your diploma tutor or not

Love,
Becky

Thanks Becky,

On another subject... I am now a Director of the Wye Community Farm and we had our first meeting last night. One of the things that was discussed was herbicides for controlling weeds on footpaths throughout Wye etc. I wondered if any of you'd know of any environmentally friendly treatment - they're talking about glyphosate which is what they've always done?

Thanks,

Jae Mather

Hi Jae,
The consensus here is that there is no env friendly herbicide, so here
are the alternatives:-
- leave them
- replace with more acceptable plants
- get a goat from Wye goat farm on a lead and pay a small boy to take
it round the village to eat the "weeds"
- hand pull for composting
- hoe them so they don't seed
- use a flame wand
- repair the holes/cracks in the pavements so that weeds can't get a
hold

There is a v. high rate of prostate cancer in men who regularly use
glyphosate (as roundup) - it's the carrier chemicals combined that
cause it, not the glyphosate, so as they are not the active
ingredients they are not tested for.

Would the farm like to come to our Haymaking Festival this year? We
would love a chicken display, or any other animals. I've attached the
poster and the stall-holder agreement form on another emial directly
to you.

dear folks,

Saturday June 18th nor Sunday June 26th is ok for me. For me that is not a problem. Maybe it is interesting to set up a doodle to see when most of us can join ?

Forwarded from Rosemary, Deal with it Transition group......

THE MERCURY WANT TO DO A BIG STORY ON THIS. IF YOU POSSIBLY CAN PLEASE JOIN US AT 3 O'CLOCK TODAY(TUESDAY) OUTSIDE THE CHARITY INN IN WOODENSBOROUGH.
POSTERS ATTACHED

Deal With It expressed it’s concern of the decision by local authorities to approve a test bore site for shale gas near Woodnesborough at the junction of A257/A256. It is similar operation in Blackpool that has hit the national headlines recently. That site’s operations has had to be halted because it appears to be causing earth tremors.

Shale Gas drilling is controversial because a sand, chemical and water mixture is pumped at high pressure deep inside the earth to break up the shale coal layer (‘fracking’ or fracturing the rock) and so release methane gas. It is portrayed a ‘green’ energy solution but reality the industry knows little of its long-term impact and there is lot of evidence from the USA of the practice polluting water supplies.

Rosie Rectcher, Deal With It Coordinator: “We are very concerned about this. It is not just the recent experience of what has happened in Blackpool although given the amount of old mine workings in the district that is of course a major concern. There is considerable evidence of the danger that this sort of operation poses to our water supply. Given we live in one of the most arid parts of the country we should not be taking risks with our water supply. Our part of Kent has the opportunity for many green energy solutions, from wind farms, tidal and the new energy park recently announced in the district. We do not need Shale Gas in Kent. We call upon the Kent County Council and Dover District Council to reject the application”

The Planning application is KCC/DO/0069/2011 and be viewed at KCC Planning Portal here

The Guardian did a good overview of the process - read here

Jae,

Thank you for sharing this, sadly I am got the message after the event.   I did object to the proposal on the planning website.

Anyone wanting to know more could look here http://www.theecologist.org/search.php?q=fracking&offset=0 for some stories on the subject.

If you enter KCC/DO/0069/2011 into the planning portal
you can formally add your objections.

We really do not need or want fracking.  I have no ideal which idiot came up with the idea of injecting highly toxic sludge at high pressure into the earth to fracture the rock and hopefully extract some gas, but it does not take a rocket scientist to realise that the chemicals will leach into our drinking water.

Please keep us posted

Unfortunately I couldn't go either - a shame as I don't live too far away. Thanks Phill for sharing additional info. You're right - what idiot came up with this idea. Especially when we're sitting on a chalk landscape, plus loads of old mine workings which extend right out to sea, where we have a fault line. It doesn't bear thinking about.

I hope yesterday went well and had the desired effect.

Hi All,
Hope you are all well and enjoying, finally, a little bit of rain.
My new community garden project has come on well - but we had to carry
in containers of water for the new veg beds! Many injured elbows
later its looking great adn entered for the Whitstable in Bloom
competition at the end of the month.

On with the business....
There hasn't been a lot of response to the suggested dates and I'm
afraid I forgot to put the write-up of our vision and mission and
dates on the facebook page so not sure if everyone got the message.

The June dates are fast approaching and I am no longer able to attend
either.

Would someone like to volunteer to organise the next meet-up? I know
we all have very busy lives so I think the best way forward to keep
our group going with all our fantastic ideas, skill and inputs would
be to take it in turn to organise meet-ups.

Becky
