Is this supposed to set the property 'foo' to the value 'bar'?
Or to create a property with name being the value returned
by the function call foo('bar') ?

What is the correct syntax to get at the other meaning?

The former.

Good question. It might go something like this:

... but $(foo('bar'))

or

... but &foo.('bar')
