build troubles

did a fresh checkout and build... large number of dynclasses tests failed.

I then made clean, configured with prefix=`pwd`... now the build itself fails:

Which is:

p = strstr(build_path, "blib"); /* .../blib/lib/... */
assert(p);

Any ideas on how to both build AND pass the tests?
