clean slate

The slate may be wiped clean by a change in personal relationships: marriage, divorce, a new baby, a new puppy, a break-up, a new friend, a death. Or the slate may be wiped clean by a change in surroundings: a new apartment, a new city, even rearranged furniture. Or some major aspect of life may change: a new job, a new school, a new doctor.

Based on a reimagined vision of labor law that works for all, the Clean Slate project focuses on advancing pragmatic and innovative policy solutions to enable working people to build countervailing power for a more inclusive and equitable nation.

Since the founding of the country, concentration of power in the hands of a small minority has been recognized as a threat to the viability of American democracy. Today, the struggle to preserve democracy in the face of extreme wealth concentration is acute because we live in a historical moment when vast disparities of economic power have been translated into equally shocking disparities in political power.

The Clean Slate for Worker Power project began in 2018, developing from a foundational question to address the dual crises of economic and political inequality in America: what would labor law look like if, starting from a clean slate, it was designed to empower working people to build a truly equitable democracy and economy? Our aim is not to return to a labor movement of yesterday entrenched in racial and gender inequalities. In order for workers to be able to build countervailing power, we believe a statutory clean slate approach to labor law reform is necessary for a truly inclusive and just economy and democracy.

In January 2020, we released a set of recommendations for a redesigned labor law with Clean Slate for Worker Power: Building a Just Economy and Democracy. The report was the product of more than a year of intensive engagement with more than 200 stakeholders, including union leaders, workers, advocates, academics, economists, futurists, students and others from the U.S. and around the world. Since the release of our initial recommendations report, Clean Slate for Worker Power has engaged with partners and collaborators across sectors to identify and implement innovative policy approaches to advancing our vision. In this new phase of work for the Clean Slate project, our focus is on deepening our partnerships with stakeholders and exploring policy and organizing strategies to empower workers at the state and local level.

Everyone should have a safe and healthy community to call home. We all want to live in a place where everyone can find a job with a fair wage and secure safe and affordable housing. But for hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents, this simple dream is out of reach.

There are a number of free resources available for people who need a lawyer or legal advice. We recommend the free resources produced by Michigan Legal Help, and the free legal services provided by Legal Aid (generally for people whose income is

Oakland County Michigan Works! launched a program to help eligible county residents expunge certain criminal convictions from their record. To start the process, individuals should complete an online Request for Services at www.oakgov.com/cleanslate. After this information is submitted, a program representative will contact the person with more details on their eligibility.

If more people can get their criminal records expunged, more people will have the opportunity to find good jobs and secure safe and affordable housing. This will help strengthen families, communities, local economies across the state, and promote public safety.

Having a criminal record can prevent people from getting a good-paying job, obtaining safe and affordable housing or even getting into a college or job training program. Many employers and landlords have policies that exclude hiring or leasing apartments to people with a criminal history. An expungement shields those convictions from public view, while allowing police and courts to still view the information.

We had three rooms' carpets and the kitchen's and entrance's tiles cleaned. Mark is very professional and decent; he wouldn't tell you it works if it doesn't. He wouldn't push for extra business opportunities as other companies would do. A straightforward guy and punctual. He also gives advises on how to take care of your carpet and tiles after cleaning. Mark and his team work like one man; very cooperative with each other. We definitely recommend him and would definitely seek his services in the future.

A Clean Slate really lives up to its name! They have come twice to our home to clean our hall rug. Their work is professional and efficient. The staff is friendly and helpful. I thought their price was fair. Very good follow up I highly recommend A Clean Slate!

This was my first experience in using upholstery cleaning service and I was pretty impressed by the job that was completed. They cleaned my sofa, love seat, and the upholstery on my dining set. Thank you so much for your hard work! Tony and Joe were friendly, professional, and personable. I would definitely recommend them to my friends and family!

Absolutely stellar service. Mark is very professional, knowledgeable and has great customer service. We had our carpets cleaned by him and his team they did a great job. I ended up asking last minute if they did mattresses and they did. Got our mattress cleaned on the same day. Highly recommended. Thank you guys for a great job.

I had Mark and his crew clean my 12-year-old couch and an older second-hand recliner I just bought. They were on time, prompt in returning calls and they did an excellent job. I'm rather particular and they exceeded my expectations, they were very meticulous in their cleaning process. My couch looks like new, the recliner actually changed color, it apparently was filthy. I'm going to have them come back after the first of the year and clean a couch and love seat. I highly recommend them for any services they provide.

Mark runs a tight, clean and courteous crew. They are professional and do a great job. I had my entire carpet cleaned throughout the house for a very reasonable price. They went above and beyond by moving furniture, kids toys, working around corners, to get all the areas of the carpet, then put everything back in its place. They were prompt and thorough. I will most certainly be calling them again for my annual carpet and tile cleaning. Hard working group!

No doubt when we were in the throes of the initial pandemic response, the entire HR team let go of its business-as-usual activities and pivoted to deliver what was needed: health and safety measures, virtual work protocols, layoffs and restructuring, pay remedies, and communication, lots and lots of communication.

Instead of attempting to find that comfortable equilibrium we are all craving, maybe now is the time to continue to ride the wave of ambiguity and uncertainty just a little longer. Maybe now is the time to ask ourselves what our company really needs in order to compete and thrive. Maybe now is the time to put everything from culture to leadership to the HR model through the zero-based planning filter and see what comes out the other side.

Zero-based planning got its start in budgeting, but the concept is transferrable to other business processes, including organization design, key capabilities and service offerings. The idea is to wipe the slate clean to create a fit-for-purpose approach within the current context. Arguably the context in which we are operating today is markedly different from what it was six months ago. So it stands to reason that everything from culture to talent strategy, from leadership models to operating models, needs to be reimagined.

In its 2018 article on zero-based productivity, McKinsey & Company provides key transferrable concepts for applying a zero-based approach, including Survival Minimum and Strategic Optimum. And in its publication on zero-based prioritization, Gartner offers a classification framework through which to sift and sort projects, starting with Mandatory and working up through Transformation, Core Differentiation, Growth and Improvement.

The engine that drives all of this needs to be built of the right stuff: agile organization structures (think spans, layers, and matrixes), smart deployment of technology (think automation and digitized customer and employee experience), and fit-for-purpose governance and planning mechanisms that emphasize agile crisis response, streamlined decisioning, and holistic risk management.

Like I said in Issue 2, the CHRO is the essential player at the business planning table this year. And if you need more colours on your palette, more brushes with which to create a reimagined picture of work in your organization, then do stay tuned for further articles in this Reimagine Work series.

Per Utah Code 77-40a-201 through 77-40a-203, a certificate of eligibility is not required for Auto/Clean Slate expungement. These expungements are initiated and completed via an automatic process in place between the Courts and BCI. There is no application process for Auto/Clean slate eligible expungement.
