Hi,

After Perian is installed and I attempt to open/play an AVI file it
prompts me to download and install Quicktime 7.

I'm betting that your avi has an srt or idx/sub files associated with it. Perian presents these as separate video tracks (there's really no other way). QT X on Lion has a regression which prevents it from being able to play files with multiple video tracks in this manner, so it presents you with the dialog to use QT Player 7. So, it could be argued that Perian supports QT X, it's QT X's player that doesn't fully support QuickTime.

P.S. We tend to prefer NicePlayer for playback.
