Hi Thomas,
At this point we’ve all moved on in our lives. If someone wanted to take the source and figure that out they are welcome to. I think they would need to call it something else and get a new icon.
I would be happy to have a short discussion around the design ideas we tried to keep in mind with someone should they be serious about taking this on.
Graham posted this years ago if you want context for why we ended the project:
I can’t speak about the others on the project, just myself at this point.
I originally worked to manage and set vision for Perian because I had something like 70-90 QuickTime components installed, and Perian was just better. Plus I knew a few of the people working on the project from previous open source work.
I thought the project was a great successor to being project manager on Adium, and it solved a real need for people.
However, I’ve been out of the Apple ecosystem and don’t even run a Mac very much anymore. After Apple copied Growl and we tried to compete, that was kind of the beginning of the end for macs for me. At least for now. That happened.
I do miss working on the project sometimes, but mostly the people who worked on it. That’s true of all of my open source work, for the most part it was a crazy era for Mac development and I met and worked with a lot of great people.
I have some new ideas, but little time to move forward with them.
