I'm still trying to get Quicktime / Perian  to run the sound on files with Windows Media Audio 2  (WMA2, WMA 2).

Any help there?

You know, nobody ever posted a file that didn't work.

So now I've learned many disturbing things about how our audio
decoders work, but I can't tell if I fixed anything.

Do any files with Perian and WMA2 work?   That would be good for me to know.

Attached is a file. (It's a silent film, but it has music.)

I look forward to your thoughts.  Thanks!

Works for me again in SVN; looks like it was fixed in
http://trac.perian.org/changeset/1131.

Hi, sorry if I'm dense about these things, but I'm not sure what you
are suggesting I do.

You seem to be saying this file plays sound for you (I don't know
what SVN is.), if so, any thoughts on what I should try to do to get
it to work for me? I have a brand new mac book pro and Perian 1.1.4
already.

Your help is much appreciated!

Following up again on WMA2 not playing sound on my computer with Perian.

I have Perian  1.1.4
On a new 17 inch Macbook pro with Mac OS X version 10.5.8
running Quicktime 7.6.4

I gather other people are able to play WMA2, and are able to play the clip I previously sent (attached again).

Any help on troubleshooting/ how to get it to work on my computer?

A previous response to my post was:

"Works for me again in SVN; looks like it was fixed in
http://trac.perian.org/changeset/1131."

But I don't know what SVN is, and that link may provide proof that WMA2 should work with Perian (right?), but I still don't understand how to address getting it to work on my computer.

Thanks for the help, and for your patience with my persistence.

The date listed there is 08/28/09 and 1.1.4 was released 07/27/09, so logically one can conclude that fix is not in 1.1.4.

Examining http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SVN yields 3 links, only one related to software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subversion_(software)  This has a much better description than I can give.

Thanks for the help, and for your patience with my persistence.

Thanks for the response Graham.

Isn't 1.1.4 the most recent version of Perian?  How/where do I download/install the version more recent than 1.1.4 that we allow me to play WMA2?

Hey Graham,

If you have a version of Perian that has been updated since 1.1.4 with that "changeset" that allows WMA 2 to be played, can you send it my way?  I feeling I'm just being an idiot not knowing how to do these things myself, but I'm not a programmer at all.  My apologies.

I'm sure there are good reasons, but I also don't understand: if Perian has fixed certain problems (like being able to play the advertised WMA 2) why not just release that fixed version  1.1.5 or whatever?

Thanks again for your time.

Partially because some of the developers don't feel that anyone is being nice about things, and partially because 1.2 isn't done yet. Plus things like developers having their laptops sent in for repair.

This is an open source project with effectively 2 people working on code in a very part time fashion (maybe 5 hours a week total on average for both of them?). That's the major cause of the delay, we don't have enough people working on the project to put out releases and test them at the speed which you would like Ralph.

Chris,

My sincere apologies if you feel my message came across as impatient
or unappreciative.

The truth is that I am mostly just confused. If I understand the
responses I am getting, it is: "It does work. There isn't a problem;
Perian does read WMA 2. We fixed it. We don't understand why you are
having a problem."

And this may all be true, but as someone who is not a developer, who
does not know how to use SVA or utilize a changeset, who only has the
last release of Perian to go on, all I really want to know is "how do
I get Perian to work for me in this regard"?

If I had been told: We've fixed the problem on our end, but have to
continue to test it before we would release it" I would of course
completely understand.

Should I just hold tight for the next release? Can I get a version
from someone who does have it working on their computer? That kind
of thing.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

- Ralph

I didn't mean to make my email sound like I thought that either, I was just trying to answer your question honestly. I don't think you're being impatient. :)

A changeset just so you know is just a one time change to the code. It can contain a lot of changes though, hence a set of changes, or changeset.

Just hold tight for the next release. We don't put out nightlies or prereleases. We also don't put out a time based roadmap of releases, since we don't have enough developers to justify it and stick to it.

This statement is the most true out of everything you sent: "If I had been told: We've fixed the problem on our end, but have to

continue to test it before we would release it" I would of course
completely understand."

I think that's the state of your specific item (correct me if I'm wrong guys).

Hope this helps, have a good weekend.
