I am using Perian in a computer lab of managed Macintosh computers
(10.5.8). When a student logs in they get the error "The application
Perian is not allowed". I know the reason is because I only allow
students to launch things from the Applications folder.

Where does Perian launch from so that I can allow it to launch inside
a managed client?

Are you using just the component, or the preference pane and the component?

I bet it's the updater app built into the prefpane, which you could theoretically get around by only deploying the components.

Or, if you want the prefpane too, just removed the updater from the prefpane and it will not attempt to launch it.
