It will scan at this stage by running Canon's own scanning software, supplied with the scanner download: scangearmp2. But this software is as rudimentary as toddler's tea set. It won't even let you change the resolution, filetype or scan area.
By the way, when I contacted Canon for help because their scanner wasn't working, they told me that they "don't support Linux". I replied by pointing out that they had taken the time to supply a driver, so surely they would want to make sure it actually worked when people installed it. But they simply repeated that they "don't support Linux".
I have owned a Canon LIDE 100 for many years. After installing the latest Ventura update on my iMac 2020 with an i9 processor, the 100 would lose connection after one scan. I'd have to unplug the scanner and restart to make another scan.
Yesterday I received a new LIDE scanner. I followed the installation directions repeatedly, disconnected the scanner, which is connected directly to my iMac with the provided cable and then with the cable from my LIDE 100. When attempting to use the IJ app, the computer cannot find the 300.
I stand corrected. Apple does provide limited AirPrint USB scanning support and both the Canon LIDE 300 and 400 are among the supported models. Apple's Image Capture should just detect them when configured for AirPrint connections.
That is all I have to go on from Apple's AirPrint listing. Otherwise, one trials VueScan Professional with either device and makes a purchase decision. Both scanner models are supported in VueScan Professional without any vendor drivers or AirPrint.
According to Canon, they no longer provide drivers or scanning software for the LIDE 300 for macOS Monterey or later. They claim it is supported by Apple's built-in AirPrint, but AirPrint supports networked devices, and the LIDE 300 is connected via USB. Try Apple's Image Capture to see if it detects the LIDE 300.
If you place a value on your time, and get fed up wasting it trying to make this scanner work on Ventura, then the optional, paid (free trial) VueScan Professional supports this scanner without any vendor drivers. That independence may be far more value than the cost of the VueScan product.
In 2010, I had a Canon flatbed scanner without macOS driver support, and I purchased VueScan Professional then to solve that issue. I still use that scanner with my M2 Mac mini Pro using VueScan and a USB-C adapter for it. I have never paid for a VueScan upgrade since original purchase, and I receive no benefit from the VueScan vendor for mentioning their product here.
I am running Ventura 13.4 and had problems with Brother printer going off line. I called Apple support and they could not fix the problem. Brother was a waste of time. Here is what I did. I added a new printer using the IP address of the printer. After selecting add printer. Select the globe which is the middle icon in add printer. Type the IP address into Address. Protocol will show as AirPrint. Then name the printer. This solution has been working when I look at my printers and scanners settings I see two printers the Brother printer that is offline and the new printer idle. I named the new printer "Brother IP address printer".
This entire thread is about supporting the Canon LiDE 300 scanner, and not about any Brother products, whose post is out of scope for the thread, and you should have submitted as its own main post in the Ventura community.
