Warning. If you are old and prone to fall asleep in front of screens, please be aware that the bottom two rows of seats nearest the screen in the XD theaters recline all the way. They are the only two rows that function that way. At the first showtime of Deadpool and Wolverine, the theater was filled. I was forced to sit in the second row. I reclined all the way. I made it through the many previews and commercials. I watched the creative opening and an exciting and bloody and fun 20 minutes. Next I knew I woke up having missed a bunch of what I assume was great stuff. Thank goodness a summer intern is watching the movie tonight. I look forward to reading his brief.
Written by summer intern Michael Harris. Despicable Me 4 is an expected yet welcome addition to the Despicable Me/Minions franchise. After Despicable Me 3 changed the dynamic of the franchise from a more character development based movie to a more comedic and action based film, Illumination has been walking on a tightrope, careful not to lean too much on either theme. It is looking like this movie will take the best parts of both themes to breathe new life into this old franchise. From new characters to the unique humour the minions always carry, Despicable Me 4 is the one movie your children will want to see this summer on the big screen (not counting In and Out 2).
Written by summer intern Michael Harris. The bad boys are back so whatcha gonna do? This is the best bad boys movie yet, full of action and comedy and singing from Reba McEntire. Much of the movie is completely unexpected. There are many recurring themes like Martin Lawrence thinking he is invincible leading to great comedy moments, and Will Smith whose panic attacks give depth to the film. This is a must-see movie. And you must see it on our XD screens at the South Point.
Aguirre Wrath of God starts off with an awe-inspiring opening scene, shot just below Machu Picchu on a steep ridge descending into the jungle. A long, serpentine column of people march downwards, out of the Andes, Conquistadors and indigenous slaves, heading into the unknown in search of El Dorado.
Fitzcarraldo (1982) relates the story of an obsessed eccentric in Iquitos (a city in the Peruvian Amazon) who dreams of building an opera house like the famous one in the Brazilian city of Manaus (the biggest city in the Amazon).
To do so, he plans to first raise a fortune by harvesting an expanse of rubber trees that are on a nearby but isolated river that lies just over a small mountain (the movie is set during the early 20th century Amazon rubber boom).
The incredible thing is that this feat was actually accomplished during the shooting of the film, on location in the Amazon, making the movie simply astonishing to watch. Here is the original trailer for the movie:
I took a film class focusing primarily on Hitchcock my senior year of college and North by Northwest was by far my favorite movie we studied. I loved the pace. I loved the hijinks. I loved the soundtrack (the iconic theme definitly made an appearance on my Instagram story the day of my visit).
My main goal in life is now to create something so culturally and politically important that I am one of the people who is allowed to climb up the faces of Mount Rushmore. Who knows, maybe this post will be that thing.
Sound on! In this clip from the Alsup Smith Family Collection, family members spend a day at ChicagoFest in August 1979, culminating in a performance by Gloria Gaynor. Kevin Alsup narrates the scene: "Everybody's together today, and we're at ChicagoFest and everyone's having a good time, I'm glad we could make the trip, we're all on board, and ready to take a sail. We're shipping off, we're gonna check out this show, and get low." Check out the Alsup Smith Family Collection, 17 films shot by Vanessa Alsup and her husband Kevin around their Englewood home and destinations across the city, from 1970-1980.
Home movie donors are invited to record an oral history with family members who recall the stories behind the films. On February 17, 2008, Susan McClelland sat down with her father Ellis McClelland and SSHMP director Jacqueline Stewart to record an interview about the McClelland family's life and home movies. Watch the interview here, and click below to visit their Collection.
High school students in APL's Teen Arts Council explored SSHMP's digital archive to learn about preserving and archiving South Side Chicago history. The teens created video collages connecting moments in time across families through everyday events, and video essays highlighting home movie moments in imaginative new ways. Watch "The History of Vacations" by Aranya A., and read more about this project on the Research & Education page.
Tarantino grew up in the South Bay and famously worked at Video Archives, a movie rental store in Manhattan Beach, well before he went on to notoriety with Reservoir Dogs (1992), and making it big internationally with Pulp Fiction (1994).
The wood-paneled office of nineteen-year bail bonds veteran Max Cherry (Robert Forster) is set in the South Bay city of Carson and was filmed in a real bail bonds office called, simply, Carson Bail Bonds. The building, across the street from Carson City Hall, is no longer there. In its place stands an apartment complex with street level retail spaces and restaurants.
After scouting some possible locations, the idea was brought up that, in an effort to save time and money, the police station could be doubled at the Jackie Brown production office, which was located in a Culver City office space at the intersection of the Marina Freeway and Sepulveda Boulevard. Today, the location is part of Punch Studio, a boutique stationary and home dcor company.

Harvey Fast brought the drive-in experience to Winner in 1950. Since then, the screen has expanded in size and survived a tornado, attracting area residents and visitors to experience a movie under the stars every weekend from June through August (with some shows continuing into September). Although Harvey passed away in 2004, the drive-in is still dedicated to creating an outdoor cinema gathering place at 27865 317th Ave just outside of Winner.
This drive-in was originally known as the Mobridge Drive-In, but was moved and renamed when the original location was flooded to form Lake Oahe. Located midway between Bismarck, North Dakota, and Pierre, South Dakota, the Pheasant can hold up to 350 cars and shows movies Friday through Monday from May through September. Come enjoy the drive-in experience at 1600 20th St. W. on the western edge of Mobridge.
