In February 2009, Norwegian media reported that "Fairytale" is about Rybak's ex-girlfriend Ingrid Berg Mehus whom he got to know through the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo.[3][4][5] Rybak has since confirmed this. At a press conference in May 2009 he revealed that the song's inspiration came from the Hulder, a beautiful female creature from Scandinavian folklore, who lures young men to her, and then may curse them for all time.[6] The Russian-language version of the song is entitled "Skazka" (Russian: Сказка).

The first official music video for the song, which was used to present the song before the Eurovision final, was Alexander Rybak's performance at the Melodi Grand Prix 2009 in Norway. The most recent video was of Rybak playing the violin and singing with his backing dancers behind him, where the background occasionally changes from white to black.

In the Norwegian preselection, Melodi Grand Prix 2009, Rybak's "Fairytale" won with a combined televote and jury score of 747,888, in the biggest victory of the contest's history. The song received over 600,000 votes more than the runner-up, which made it the clearest win in the history of Melodi Grand Prix.[1][7]

The song also debuted on the Norwegian Singles Chart on the week of 11 February 2009 at number 3,[13] before rising to number one on the following week, the week of the Melodi Grand Prix final.[14] This was the first time that the Melodi Grand Prix winner reached number 1 before winning the contest. The song remained at number 1 for 8 consecutive weeks.[15] The song has since entered the Swedish Sverigetopplistan, debuting at number 47, before rising to number 7 in its third week, the week of Eurovision - eventually reaching the top spot. After the song gaining the Top Spot on Eurovision, it entered the Top Ten of many Charts across Europe, and also the No. 1 position in many countries.[16] The song debuted on the UK charts at #10 on Downloads Alone and then dropped to #38 the next week, it also reached Number 3 on the Download Chart. "Fairytale" is the ninth non-UK Eurovision entry to reach the top ten in the UK charts since the contest began in 1956, most recently Johnny Logan reached #2 representing Ireland in 1987.[17] It was certified Gold in Finland[18] and Norway.[19] The single went multi-platinum in different formats in Russia. It first went platinum as realtone full track and sold 100,000 copies.[20] Then it was certified 2 platinum as ring-back tone with another 400,000 copies sold.[21]Combined sales of the song are 500,000 copies without online downloads.

The Pointer Sisters had introduced "Fairytale" in performance during their April 21, 1974 concert at the San Francisco Opera House; their live version was featured on the Live at the Opera House album released in September 1974.

Bonnie Pointer would play down the idea of a C&W hit by the Pointer Sisters being a novelty: "People think because we're always trying something different we're not sincere. Like country music. For us, it's no joke...Our folks came from Arkansas and we grew up singing country songs. It's part of us."[3]

"Fairytale" went on to win the Pointer Sisters the Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for the year 1974, marking the first awarding of a Grammy to an all-female vocal group and making the Pointer Sisters the only black women to date who have won a Grammy in a country music category. Bonnie and Anita Pointer also received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Country Song as the writers of "Fairytale."

What techniques would you use for composing a faery tale genre song? Any specific techniques for composing the melody? Common instruments (I assume flute, celesta/glockenspiel, bell tree?). I am going to be scoring a horror short film and the director wants fairy tale music for the opening scene; I have to admit I have not dabbled in fairy tale music. I listed to track #1 of the Shrek soundtrack, titled Fairy Tale, and it is quite simple-- motif of G Bb C , C Bb G... then a variation heard is G Bb C , Eb D Bb C, using harp, flute/woods, strings, bell tree, choir, a little timpani roll, and horns, handing off the melodic motif among the instruments.

A Fairy Tale Song is the Super Music Friends Show song in Fairy Tale. The Flaming Lips sing about how you can be almost anything by using your imagination. The song is a parody of their hit song "I Can Be a Frog".

Truly great songs that are as emotionally powerful as Fairytale of New York are very rare indeed. Fairytale is a lyrical high wire act of dizzying scope and potency, and it rightly takes its place as the greatest Christmas song ever written. It stands shoulder to shoulder with any great song, from any time, not just for its sheer audacity, or its deep empathy, but for its astonishing technical brilliance.

In the end, I feel sorry for Fairytale, a song so gloriously problematic, as great works of art so often are, performed by one of the most scurrilous and seditious bands of our time, whose best shows were so completely and triumphantly out of order, they had to be seen to believed.

Yet, time and time again the integrity of this magnificent song is tested. The BBC, that gatekeeper of our brittle sensibilities, forever acting in our best interests, continue to mutilate an artefact of immense cultural value and in doing so takes something from us this Christmas, impossible to measure or replace. On and on it goes, and we are all the less for it.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Eagles center Jason Kelce and his brother -- and Taylor Swift's boyfriend -- Travis Kelce have reached the top of the Billboard charts with their Christmas duet "Fairytale of Philadelphia," a ditty off "A Philly Special Christmas Special."

"Fairytale of New York, has long been one of my favorite songs (not just Christmas songs), as it gets to the roots of love, anger, resentment, sacrifice, and ultimately companionship," Kelce wrote in part. "It was an honor for my brother and I to take a stab at such a beautiful song in a different angle, and his acknowledgement of it is beyond surreal."

So when the drop date for the Xmas single featuring Travis was announced, the fanbase began campaigning on social media to secure the song a spot on the charts, especially once they found out it would be supporting charity.

Each year I want to write a long angry Facebook status for my friends to endure about the media narrative around this song and alleged calls by the LGBT+ community to censor it, but normally I coax myself off the cliff edge remembering that I have more important things to do with my time.

While sticking up a punk middle-finger to the Yuletide status quo, it also acknowledges something few other Christmas songs address: the bleak reality that the festive period is harsh, lonely and unforgiving for those of us with troubled lives and toxic relationships.

It is a single regrettable word in a song that is otherwise full of charm and true gritty beauty that many relate to. Censored or uncensored, I hope I hear it for many Christmases to come, and I shall certainly keep performing it.

The song has landed No. 1 on the Rock Digital Song Sales and Holiday Digital Song Sales charts. In addition to the amazing sales, the song has racked up 1.1 million official U.S. streams from Nov. 17 to Nov. 23, according to Billboard.

The hit song will appear on the new Philadelphia Eagles Christmas charity album "A Philly Special Christmas Special" which is set to release on Dec. 1. Other members of the Eagles and special guest R&B legend Patti LaBelle are featured on the album as well.

Based on a book by Trinidad-born writer Rosa Guy titled My Love, My Love; or The Peasant Girl, Once on This Island is a beautiful but tragic tale about class division, love, and sacrifice. On Haiti, villagers tell a small girl the tale of the peasant Ti Moune, who ends up the caught in a game between two island gods. In an attempt to prove whether love or death is stronger, the gods put Ti Moune in a position to fall in love with a rich grande homme from the other side of the island, and watch to see what happens when she finds out about his arranged marriage. Though not accurate island music, the emotional score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty gives this show an epic, operatic feel. Definitely a good one for anyone who loves their fantasy with a mythic dimension to it.

In a video shared on Instagram by the official NFL account and A Philly Special Christmas account on Wednesday, Jason Kelce, the Philadelphia Eagles' center, is seen asking brother Travis Kelce, a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, to sing a song for the deluxe version of the Christmas album \"A Philly Special Christmas.\"

\"The Deluxe Album: A Philly Special Christmas 2022 & 2023\" has 11 new songs and features artists including Patti LaBelle, Amos Lee, The Hooters' Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman, DM Hotep, Kevin Hanson, The Silver Ages choir and more.

I recently just found an old favourite song of mine and after listening the lyrics closer realised it is infact about being in a narcissistic relationship. Totally serendipitous. So then I went on the hunt to find some more and I found this little gem of a page, so thank you. Music really does heal.
