Are you load testing web application performance only web application. If so don't worry about files as that's client window processing. If you want to measure time it takes to send file to client browser then look for request response for that get/ post

We have an application I am trying to test that has functionality to export
rows in a grid to Excel. This function forces the windows user to respond
in a dialog box to where the file should be saved.

Does anyone have a suggestion how I can script WebLOAD to take this action?
It seems like it only understands the interactions that happen within the
browser and I can't find documentation or examples to do this.

I know this forum seems lightly used, so anyone with thoughts on this,
    please speak right up.

    Thanks!
    TT

All load testing tool simulate the traffic between client and server. I doesn't simulate the client activities/JS.

Thanks,

That is right. Load tool should be meant for traffic but you van write code to create activex objects to do client side things. I haven't tried that yet but will see if I can. Webload allows execution of java code from packages

it uses liveconnect

put class files in webload directory/liveconnect/classes folder and access it from your js.

Enjoy..
