I've realized from reading the comments in the recent Rule Update that many people (rightfully) hate drm-ed ebooks with a passion but are unaware of the many places one can legally acquire drm-free fantasy ebooks and so resort to piracy instead. I've hence written up a list of legal drm-free ebook sources for those of us who are opposed to supporting "Defective by Design" ebooks but are also opposed to supporting ebook piracy.

You can buy drm-free fantasy ebooks from Baen, Tor (also Tor ebooks at Kobo are supposedly drm-free), Angry Robot, Smashwords (i.e. several self-published authors like Lindsay Buroker), Image Comics (i.e. comic books like Saga), Weightless Books, DriveThruFiction, Subterranean Press, etc. as well as several book bundles like Humble Bundle, StoryBundle, etc. See the Guide for DRM-free living: Literature for an even longer list of vendors. Often if you go to a (self-published) author's website they'll also have their own drm-free ebook store (often using a vendor like e-junkie) and sometimes if they don't and you ask them nicely they'll arrange something (i.e. put it on Smashwords for you to buy). There is no need to pirate e-books when there are so many legit drm-free fantasy authors/publishers you could support. If you really want to support drm-free ebooks then purchase drm-free ebooks (and perhaps boycott "defective-by-design" authors/publishers).

Some people pirate books because (they perceive) they can't afford to buy books. You can obtain free (and legal) drm-free fantasy ebooks from the Baen Free Library (as well as the legal-to-share Baen CD material), Tor ebook club, and all the free culture material on Project Gutenberg. There are also several fantasy serials one can freely read online like Worm, A Practical Guide to Evil, Threadbare, Ra, 鬼吹灯, etc. (r/fantasy has a whole wiki of them). Also several self-published authors (like Ms. Buroker) will offer the first book in a series free on Smashwords or on their website in the hopes of hooking you into buying the rest of their series. If you are a fan of short fiction there are also sites like Clarkesworld, Tor's Original Fiction page, Baen Fantasy Adventure Award winners, World SF Blog, Pornokitsch, etc.

p.s. Some people advocate buying Kindle ebooks and then breaking the DRM but 1) that is illegal (although probably shouldn't be). 2) if you buy ebooks using Firefox on Linux I don't think it is even possible to download a Kindle book to the computer in the first place without jumping through some ridiculous hoops like emulating another operating system or physically buying an extra computer (i.e. a Kindle). 3) you still indirectly support DRM by buying it, even if you remove the DRM later.

Themes in Our Free Fantasy Books
Fantasy story telling often explores universal themes such as good versus evil, the hero's journey, and the power of imagination. These themes resonate with readers because they provide an escape from reality while also addressing deeper truths about human nature. The battle between light and dark forces, the transformation of ordinary individuals into heroes, and the limitless possibilities of the imagination are all central themes in fantasy literature.

Good versus Evil
One of the most prevalent themes in fantasy books is the eternal struggle between good and evil. From J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" to J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, this theme is a cornerstone of the genre and can be found in surrealistic stories like Deserted Cities of the Heart by Lewis Shiner. It reflects the age-old battle between morality and corruption, reminding readers of the importance of standing up for what is right.

The Hero's Journey
Journies made by heroes is another recurring theme in fantasy literature. The protagonist, often an ordinary individual, embarks on a quest or adventure that tests their courage and character. Through trials and tribulations, they grow and transform into a hero capable of overcoming great obstacles. This theme resonates with readers as it mirrors their own personal journeys of self-discovery and growth. The courageous acts of heroes and heroines in the sfree stories you'll find on Obooko can ignite a spark within us, encouraging us to face our own challenges with bravery and resilience. The KDP royalty pricing formula gets pretty complex, so if you want to avoid it altogether, a cleaner (and more profitable) way to distribute your ebooks is by self-publishing and selling your ebooks directly to your e-readers.

There are some general things to keep in mind when considering what makes a good book cover. However, when it comes to specific genres, it will vary depending on your book! Are you writing an epic fantasy novel with kick-ass assassins and magical wizards? Or are you writing a romance novel for young adults? Whether your readers are browsing literal bookshelves or swiping through Amazon, a solid fantasy book cover design helps boost sales and get people talking about your book.

Is there a particular character or setting that your cover should feature? A hooded figure or dark-colored landscape can signal that you are telling an other-worldly or epic narrative. Consider famous high fantasy books like The Name of the Wind or The Way of Kings as excellent examples. These fantasy book cover designs signal that the characters will have a traditional quest-structure in the novel ahead of them.

Imagery: pictures or imagery for adult fantasy novels ranges from symbolic like the One Ring on the cover of The Fellowship of the Ring to completely immersive like the cityscape on the cover of The Lies of Locke Lamora.

This richly layered cover gives us the best of both worlds with a central image of our protagonist backlit by her fantasy landscape. We get a glimpse into this epic fantasy that pairs well with the title of the novel. If your story has a longer title as this one does, placement and size ratios become crucial to getting the most out of your cover design.

This mystic green cover design combines the best elements of fantasy and historical fiction. The scenery in the back of this cover gives us medieval world vibes, and the bright green sword does a neat job of tying the title and imagery together. The color green often symbolizes the environment, greed, chaos, and life. Dark green coloring like we have here can represent the corruption of those symbols.

Feast of the Fates features a dark blue cover design with contrasting white font. The color blue can represent mental engagement or spirituality. In a fantasy setting, this can let readers know that destiny and fate play important roles in the text.

The young adult market is super competitive. YA fantasy novels are a fan favorite among readers and writers! You need a cover that can captivate teen and adult readers (adults make up a huge chunk of the YA market).

Imagery: As with adult fantasy, imagery can be symbolic, or it can be a literal picture of your character or their world. Most fantasy book cover designs incorporate a combination of both.
